  • Where is my Heat Shield?

Posted by Gerald on November 18, 2014 at 7:05 pm

I was filling the generator air bags and generally checking things out as I noticed that the exhaust side turbo is pretty close to the foam above. The exhaust turbo does not seem to be cooled; the exhaust elbow most certainly is not. Under load that exhaust elbow would be 800-900 deg F. Shouldn’t there be a heat shield?

There is just an inch or so between the exhaust elbow and the foam which is starting to sag in places. The generator has been fine for a couple of thousand hours but I think this is just an accident waiting to happen. I plan on installing a heat shield or get a turbo blanket.

My generator is a Powertech 20 KW. How are your generators set up? With a heat shield or an exhaust blanket?

Liberty uses a really nice exhaust blanket but they also use very flimsy exhaust which I replaced with stainless hose that is very flexible.
