  • Where are the sensors?

Posted by Larry & Diane on May 20, 2019 at 9:52 pm

Where would I find the Fluid Level Sensors for our holding and water tanks on our H3-45 ?

I haven’t looked anywhere apart from my plumbing bay ( driver’s side) and couldn’t see them?

Liberty is so good at hiding things I thought I should just ask up front.

    Thanks in advance..

    Cheers, Diane laughing

There are no sensors. The Headhunter water and holding tank level sensing is done via a unit that measures head pressure of the tank contents, by periodically blowing a small amount of air down a tube to clear the contents of that small plastic hose or tube and then measuring head pressure from the contents of the tank.

Assuming no defects in the black box sitting on the tank (which makes a buzzing sound periodically) the sensing system may require a re-calibration or it may have an air leak somewhere at the top preventing accurate or even any readings.

If there is any reason to think the system isn’t working or accurate the first step is to press a small button on the rear of the black box, verify when doing that the small internal compressor is working and that you do get a reading. If the leak is the problem and it is not too large you should get an initial reasonably accurate reading. From that point on however you may have a leak to fix, a needed recalibration or the “black box” has failed.

The dip tube that goes into the tank for the air pump tends to get plugged as well. You can usually clean it with compressed air or remove it from the tank and clean the tube. It works by pressurizing the dip tube with the internal air compressor in the black box and then measures the pressure to determine the tank level.

The Headhunter tank level sensing system is pretty reliable and at least in my experience has been easily serviced. Rather than feeling compelled to fill and empty a one hundred plus gallon tank while servicing or repairing the Headhunter I use a small tube of water with the same height as the water level in the tank since the system is measuring head pressure, not volume.

As Mikee points out sometimes just pulling the sensing tube from the tank and cleaning it is all it takes to restore a system that is not accurately reporting the level of the contents.

But the easiest fall back position to deal with a faulty holding tank level sensor is just never add water to the fresh water tank without first dumping the holding tank.

Thanks Guys for that info… My holding tank reads 50% all the time.. I always flush the tank out after a trip so I would be hoping it isn’t plugged up.. I hit the reset button you mentioned a couple of times..I can hear the compressor run and sounds like air going into the tank and at that point the level lights go down to zero then after another minute or two goes back up to 50% full darn it…. so right now I have to watch how much water we use to calculate it.. only filling water tank to 3/4 full in order not to overfill the holding tank.

BTW the tank is definitely empty I did check that out.

What is involved in removing the tank sensor (tube) or running compressed air into it?

Again thanks so much for all the good help here !!

    Cheers Diane

Follow the black 1/4″ air line from the black box to the tank. That is where the dip tube is. Remove it from the tank and clean or try blowing compressed air directly into the dip tube. The dip tube is flexible so it can be removed from the tank petty easily.
