  • Wheel Temps

Posted by Archived on July 24, 2013 at 9:48 pm

After getting the wheel seal fixed, that wheel now runs 20 – 25 degree’s hotter than the other tag and steer wheels. Nothing seems wrong and then I got to thinking about the oil. It’s possible that someone in the past changed out my hub oil to synthetic and Prevost uses dino. So I have three runing almost identical and the hotter one is the one that was changed.

    Think that’s possible?

Could it be that the bearings are set a bit too tight?

What Gerald said. I doubt if synthetic would make that much difference. The other thing to check is to see if the brake is dragging. Remember the tech messed with the caliper and if he didn’t know the process to change the hub it’s possible he messed something up when he re-installed the caliper.

The bearing run out is good, he used a dial indicator and maybe the brake is dragging a little. I called Prevost and they said that themperature should not be a concern and in time will probably run cooler. The first reading was 175 and 100 mile later it was 150 and the last one was 145. I’ll keep an eye on it.

The cynic in me thinks after a few miles you will wear enough off the dragging brake pads to allow the temps to come down.

That’s my story and I am sticking to it unless someone can help me understand how bearings with the proper run out all of a sudden start to run cooler. If you start feeling that little pulsing in the area of your tag axle when you apply the brakes due to a warped disc you know the answer.

Tom, as you know I don’ t have enough experience to offer specific bearing advice but I have run synthetics for many years in cars, pickups and motorcycle motors. All have run significantly cooler. Based on my experience with the air cooled motorcycles which seems the closest comparison, 20 to 25 degrees hotter without synthetic is very possible.

Thanks Goeorge, that’s good to know. I have lots of miles to cover so I’ll keep an eye on and keep taking temperatures.
