  • Wheel nut size?

Posted by Tom on March 12, 2013 at 10:52 am

While doing the refurb of the rear of our bus I replaced the drive axle Budd inner nuts and the outer nuts. On our return trip from Myrtle Beach I noticed at a rest stop that I had lost 4 lug nut covers on the passenger drive wheel. I tightened up the remaining six and drove home. When I got home I had 2 more missing.

We have the Alcoa hub covers where a threaded collar pushes on the nut and the nut cover screws on the collar to hold the hub cover in place.

The nuts came from BWP brake supply through my wife’s work place. In the garage I can tell that the collars are not as tight on the new nuts as the old nuts. We measured with a dial caliper and the original nut is 1.497 and the new nuts are 1.480. Does not sound like much but it is enough to let my caps fall off and that is not a good thing.

Anyone experienced this before. My next attempt is to wrap the collar threads with teflon tape before screwing on the cap to see it that will make it tighter on the nut. I guess the manufacturer saves a lot of money using just a little less metal in each nut.
