  • What’s involved in Changing inverters

    Has anyone swapped the 2500 hearts for 3012 magnum inverters and what does it involve? Thanks Jim

    I did the swap out on my 99.

    Nothing really technical to over come.

    As could be expected, the Magnums wiring hook ups are in a different place than the old inverters. Installing the magnums using the available wiring would have me turning the inverters sideways with the front of the inverter facing left or right instead of the control panel on the inverter facing out towards the bay door, didn’t want that so I had to take the three runs of romex coming from the CC breaker boxes and putting them in a junction box and going from there to the inverter connections. I just made sort of an extension cord set up because the CC wiring was too short.

    Also when you unwire the old inverters make sure and label the runs of romex so nothing gets crossed up.

    I replaced both of my black Heart Xantrax inverters for new Magnum 2812 pure sine wave inverter because I installed a new refrigerator. Why do you such large inverters? The 2800 X 2 is 5600 total watts. The MS2812 was a simple swap.

    It would be prudent to size them in watts as close as possible to the existing units because you don’t want to over power your existing wiring.

    I installed Magnum MS2812 w/remotes and temp sensors in place of my old 2500 Hearts 5 yrs ago. I had to rearrange things in that bay a little, but no big deal.

    Thank you Buddy when you ran a junction box you just ran cc Romex in junction box and did you wire nut it to the new romex extensions in the box and that was sufficient. Thank all of you very much Jim

    Yes

    I used a couple of the plastic junction boxes, one on each side of the bay side wall to make all the connections.

    A lot of wires to deal with and makes the box full by the time you connect everything but it allowed me to mount the inverters in the correct position.

    I didn’t do this but you might check and see if it would be possible to run new romex from the originating positions.

    I doubt you could pull new wire through the bays to the inverters.

    I don’t think I can get new wires to power box but did some research and I already have 2.0 wires on dc side and 10 gage on the romex to power box so if I put in junction boxes and 10 gage to inverters should be good thank you very much for your help. Jim

    A few years ago I changed out our original square wave inverters for two Magnum 2800 sine wave inverters. Easy job which I did while parked at a rally. Took a couple of hours to do the change over plus a couple more head scratching trying to figure out the proper settings on the Magnum remote panels.

    One strong recommendation is to add the Magnum shunt package at the same time so you can directly read the capacity remaining in your battery bank on the Magnum remote panel. I have but did not install the Magnum auto gen start module. I am not sure any of those voltage based auto gen start units make much sense for lead acid batteries given the voltage sag while powering AC loads through an inverter. With the lithium batteries I have now they would be better but I still like to control that myself based on actual remaining capacity. Auto gen start would make more sense if one regularly leaves the coach with high amp draw appliances running.
