  • What’s inside this, and can I screw into it?

Posted by Andrew on December 11, 2022 at 1:07 pm

This lower bump out runs along both sides of the bus at the floor. I assume it’s some kind of chase for wiring, but not sure. Is it OK to sink a screw into this, and long as I don’t go deeper, than say 3/4″?

    Thanks!

Apply the risk versus reward formula to the question. For the amount of time saved by not removing the cover of the chase, is it worth the risk?

A lot of buses have had leaks in coolant pipes (for aux. heaters), screws in wire bundles, and other items under those covers and even though the risk is very slight is it worth it?

On my bus I have a 3″ diameter bundle of wires, fresh water lines, drain lines and some coax. There is enough stuff that the risk is high enough to go through the effort to check.

I prefer stuff like the below vs nails or screws

I saw my chase cover removed a few years ago when we added some outlets to the top of the chase.

Can you put a screw in there without causing a problem? Maybe, possibly, probably … but not for sure.

I would loosen and remove the chase cover and figure out a way to be able to fasten whatever you want to fasten using the 3/4″ screw. Rivet Nuts, Tee-Nuts (pronged or smooth), or barrel nuts are options to create a threaded insert in the chase cover to fasten what you want to fasten to it.

Thanks for all the replies. If I can get the cover off, then I’ll take a closer look.

Mine is an air duct. I screwed into it, luckily I didn’t hit anything. That I know of. ??‍??
