  • What your experience?

Posted by Hector on November 6, 2016 at 11:15 am

After several years of tolerating the roar of my Dometic
Heat Pumps air conditioners (very loud), I am looking for a quiet and cold roof top AC
    replacement.
I am planning a trip to
Tennessee to have Jeff install these ACs, but just cannot settle on what to
    install.
I do know what I do not want,
    Dometic heat pumps, loud AC’s.

So I am reaching out to the Prevost community to ask for
feed back on the brand, model of roof top AC’s that you have experience
    with.
This should bring a wide array of
    responses.
    Any and all responses are
    appreciated.

Secondly, I need to replace my Splindide combo
    washer/dryer.
    Any experience you are
willing to share, brand, model numbers?

Also, any tips for my upcoming trip to Tennessee from others
    will be appreciated.
What to see and what not to see. I will be driving from Livingston, Texas.

    Thanks,

    Hector.

    Hector,

I would suggest you talk on the phone to Jeff for a possible solution. Based on feedback from others, including other bus sites it is possible the older roof top ACs were actually quieter than the replacements available today. However I do know that when Liberty made a major change in their approach to air conditioning the coach and started using roof ACs on certain models they made a major effort to control noise. I do not know if they were completely successful or if it involved a design that can or cannot be retrofit.

We do have some members who I know have Liberty coaches with roof airs, and one had a previous coach also with roof airs that might be able to offer an opinion regarding noise levels. Perhaps they may post a response to this thread.

Noise level has always been the drawback to roof airs and what is an acceptable level may be subjective, however I believe those with the Liberty coaches with roof ACs also have Cruiseairs in the same coach so you should be able to get an accurate reading on noise levels.

I did remove the operating A/Cs on my coach to replace them with Atwood 15K btu heat pumps, both of them. They are already quieter than other brands but they are the only brand that can be run all the time on LOW fan. There are two fan motors, one for the outside condensor and a three speed inside fan. Really quiet as a result.

The top of the compressor is restrained from rocking lock to lock on the shock mounts unlike any other brand I have ever seen. The plate that sandwiches the roof unit to the roof is a duct work that smoothly changes the downward flow of the air to horizontal flow. The data cable that connects my controls to the roof unit is on a retracting reel so it does not get stuffed out of the way by the tech.

With both compressors running plus normal loads, no toaster, coffee maker, microwave, etc on, I see 27 amps on my EMS readout.

The output air is cold. I have never set the fan to hi to get the coach cool in the Texas summer.

I do like mine a lot and Carolyn really likes the quiet operation. They are quieter than my several friends Newell basement units.
