A safe full of money works for me!! But for real I would remove one of the sofas for a recliner. RICK
-
I would like some of Rick’s safe money and a north/south bed instead of east/west.
-
I do not know who Rick is but would also like some of his money to pay for some upgrades we are contemplating 1-Remove exsiting full length Girard on curb side remove pull down awnings on street side repair all fastner points install two full length zipdee awnings and end caps, painted to match the coach, Remove exsisting J-lounge replace with booth with fabric back and leather seating to match exsiting interior. This is quite a bit of money but like our coach and presently want to keep it, I would not do this myself, have a quote and saw another 2005 being done, was very concerned about how the awnings would mount to roof but was relieved to see thru frame mounting. Any one done this?

My
97 Royle has the old style manual Zip Dee awnings used on most of the older
coaches. I have been considering changing to automatic awnings and reading the comments on POG for some time covering the old style Zip Dee, new
automatic Zip Dee and theGirard. The posts seem to indicate the old Zip Dee works well
but is somewhat difficult to use and is not automatic. The new Zip Dee has
motor problems and frequent failures. This is the first time I have seen
someone wanting to remove the Girard awnings.I’m
curious what the recommended awnings are from this group and why? Or should I
just update the tried and true Zip Dees with a new material?

There seems to be a lot of issues with the various automatics John, my preference is the good ole manual Zip Dee’s. Then again, you hear from others that have the automatics and love them.

We learned a long time ago that our coaches are a compromise. We are given a specific amount of space and that is what we have to work with. We have limited power. We have very specific weight limits.
We also have a degree of complexity in our systems. As our systems get more capable, as in more automatic, they also become more prone to problems. As a personal preference I want less weight, more reliable sytems, and much less complexity. As an example, my big ZipDee awning requires me to manually pull it out. But in 21 years of Zip Dee manual awning ownership I replaced one brake and had one reinstalled when sudden wind gusts took it off. I prefer the simplicity to the service requirements of automation.
That holds true for almost everything in our coach. My ideal coach would have bullet proof devices and systems. But that doesn’t mean I don’t want some things, even though right now they are not probable. I would love to be able to lift the fenders at the rear axles to access the air bags, shocks, ride height valves, etc. just like what XLII owners can do. I would love the new multiplex electrical system. We would love having about 3 or 4 ceiling vent fans that can operate in the rain or when driving, but our fancy mirrored ceiling is likely to kill that idea because of the issues it presents. And we would like a dinette booth instead of our table and chairs. But I have to be able to open up the kitchen/dining area to service the refrigerator so that is not going to happen.

John
I don’t know where you live but if you decide to remove your manual zip dees, please keep me in mind, I am interested in the whole coachs awnings.

Rob,
My ZipDees are here to stay. At some point the fabric is going to get replaced ($$$$$) but I am not going to get automatic or motorized awnings for a wide variety of reasons.
-
Jon, it is the other John (Klop) that is a few replys up from yours that was “thinking’ about going to automatics that I was in reference to. BTW, thanks for all your help and have a good trip.

I would put in the home model sub zero 36″ refigerator, and I know it is too tall.
-
I would like more counter space and storage in the galley.
-
There will never be enough storage or space in any “H” to handle your shoes and purse purchases!

I am building my 5 th conversion. hopefully last…. Trying to see what works for others and does not. Good feed back! Our main use is pole to pole with occasional two or three day dry camping. Now we have 3 slides and a bath and 1/2 already installed. Some responses have confirmed our decisions as well as revisted some. Bob & Judy

I have the longest zip dee they make on my H model and I’d gladly swap for a girard electric or any electric for that matter!
As for what I would change in our coach? Well the flooring which I’m about done with! Went from carpet and vinyl tile to all ceramic tile including the steps! Other thing I did was swap the full size mattress for a queen! Much more room! Then more closet space! Definitly need more closet space!

Interesting feed back, on the awning update, did not know Zip Dee was plauged with motor problems. May consider adding another 4 foot girard to drivers side, but would want both mounted on top rather than side mounted. Might have to fab new rear and front caps. considering “rivnuts to anchor with. They are used on all airplanes when mounted to frame should be fine ? what say you?
