What tire covers do you use?
Posted by Archived on July 25, 2019 at 7:26 pmI’ve been looking for tire covers for my XL… What do you use that’s high quality and fits the tires?

Hi Tom, I do that with a 50 mile run at minimum once a month. I’ve noticed almost all RV’s in storage use them and is what prompted the question. Just thought I’d find out if they are used by the members and if so what’s best? Thanks Tom.

Harry:
I use tire covers when I store my coach due to the intense Florida sun.
I got mine from a company in Lakeland, Florida that does make custom covers. yes they are more expensive than the Camping World plastic ones,
They run $85 a tire. They cover the tire completely on the exposed surface. On the top of the tire they make a pocket the runs down about 30% of the back of the tire. They also have a pocket on the bottom to put a weighted tube to keep from blowing off in the wind. Other ones I have used, you had to reach around the tire with an elastic strap. Not these. I am pleased with the product.
The also make covers for wipers and mirrors to match. And of course windshield covers.

No doubt covers make a modest contribution to the life of the tire. But I am still waiting for advocates of those covers to explain to me how it is that the inside tires on the drive axle seem to develop cracks from aging just as fast as the tires exposed to the sun.
If anyone is really serious about preventing or minimizing the effects of aging the answer is to run those tires frequently so the compounds within the tire that resist aging are released. Even with doing all possible to resist aging after a certain age (around 7 years) frequent inspections are required to insure the tires are safe. An inspection is difficult and expensive because it involves more than just looking at the outside of the tire. It involves an inspection of the inside as well.
And no matter how well maintained a tire is ten years has to be considered the absolute end of life.

Harry,
I bought the Camping World covers originally for our Country Coach. I bought the largest size, since I knew we were going to upgrade sooner or later. The Country Coach ended up sitting for about two years twice because of certain circumstances, and the tires developed sidewall cracks. While the covers may or may not help, I thought they were cheap enough to be worth the potential benefit to keep the tires from cracking, although I still use 7 years as a tire life maximum. So far I have had no cracking in the tires on this coach, and I will be replacing them this year. The covers have held up well, and fit well. I put them on anytime the coach sits more than a week.

I use these while the coach is in Florida, made to order by Magne Shade, about $60 per tire depends on size.

Harry … why wouldn’t you get tire covers that match the booties you bought to cover the rear view mirrors and windshield wipers?
