What is the preferred fuel filter?
Currently my 60 series engine has the stock primary and secondary fuel filter setup. I was thinking of upgrading to the Detroit Diesel Fuel Pro(R), but just the other day I was in a local truck service center and picked a nice glossy sheet describing the wonderfulness of the Cummins FH235 & FH236 Diesel Pro(R) “with proprietary StrataPore(TM) media”.
So I’m wondering if I’ll be better off sticking with what I got, or upgrading…. and if upgrading, which system is better. So, thought I’d ask around for any thoughts or opinions.

Over the years I have had two coaches with a Racor primary filter, followed by the typical spin on primary and secondary fuel filters. I currently have just the standard spin on primary and secondary filters.
I change them every 5000 miles typically, but have gone longer when travel interfered with my normal service interval. I miss the Racor because its bowl allowed me to monitor the system for water, but except for one instance about 20 years ago I have never seen any evidence of water or contaminents in my fuel. The one time I had an issue I apparently got a tank of dirty fuel in OK, and it showed up as I was crossing NV. I carried spare Racor pleated filters and by changing those filter elements a couple of times prematurely the problem was resolved.
Fuel filters have to be somewhat efficient to trap contaminents, especially on newer engines like the Volvo, but not to the point where they filters inhibit flow. I would stick with the filters specified for your coach, but if i added a filter, such as the Racor I would use it as primary and use a 30 micron element to catch the big stuff.

I’ve used the fuel-pro for years. If you pick up poor fuel, you know it. Generally, it has extended my filter change intervals to 20,000-30,000 miles with the confidence of knowing the condition of the filter.
