  • What is it???

OK this is embarrassing, but I give up. I confess up front I have owned this bus 6 years and have ignored this thing. Don’t beat me up too badly. Would you forgive (or believe) me if I said it’s the only thing on the bus that I don’t at least think I know what it is, what it does, and how often it has to be maintained?

While pro actively replacing idler pulley bearings at 215K on the coach I bumped my head on it twice. I found two bad ones by the way, on the serpentine belt tensioner and the AC belt idler roller. This led to my thinking what the heck is this thing anyway. It has two braided lines – one runs to the lower left side of engine oil pan, the other goes up to the engine block somewhere I think, but not positive. It has a fitting on top of the can with a screw off cap and the fitting under the cap kind of looks like the male end of a quick connect on a tractor pto hydraulic line. No labeling anywhere that I could find. Looks like an aftermarket add on. I could not find it illustrated or mentioned in any Prevost literature or photos of engine bay.

Stump the chump, the chump is stumped.

During a spare moment I have been doing some web searches and I’m leaning toward the gizmo is a bypass ultra fine – like 3 micron is what many vendors claim – oil filtration system. The port on top is a place to draw off oil samples for oil analysis.

That leaves me with the issue of brand and are the “ultra” filters still available.

For now it doesn’t seem to be broken as in “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it” and I am going to let it be until I can find out more.

9+ yrs ago when I had Cummins powered motorhome(s), I use to build and install a remote mounted engine oil bypass filtration system on them.

Then I bought our Detroit powered Prevost and discovered that Fleetguard made a filter for our 60 series (and many other engines) that is both a full flow and a bypass filter (# LF9620) and that’s what I’ve been using ever since. No need for a separate/remote filter setup.

My ISX use the bypass filter on the engine ,but it is for bypassing the filter when the oil gets dirty,it dosen’t clean,I do not like the price of of the magnetic bypass filter on my ISX no oil filter should cost $1300 then $1300 is cheap insurance if it what Cummins wants

That is a good price on the extended service filter but I cannot find good buys on the Cummins 3401544 ES filter I can buy the Lf9009 Fleetguard for 70 bucks it is supposed to be a replacement, using the full syntheic Valvoline I can go 25,000 miles or more according to the oil samples with ES filter and it is about time for service
