  • What happened

Posted by Rodger on July 11, 2013 at 1:19 pm

Brought bus home , parked, leveled and shut down. When at home, I release all the air then level upward so bus is close to ground. Today, went to raise bus and…nothing! Engine running, plenty of air, did not come to ride height. Raised and lowered tag, pumped brakes, still no return to ride height. With engine still running, put Level Low (LL) selector into left then right and front positions and tried to manually bring bus up….nothing… Seems like nothing is happening between the selector and my solenoids below. I am not hearing any air escape when turning selector valve. Going outside to bus to see if anything has changed? No recent problems to forewarn me.

    Rodger,

Hard to diagnose over a forum, but let me ramble a bit as I process the information, and then tell me if my understanding is correct.

When you parked the bus you were at ride height and you went from the driving position on your level low rotary switch to the manual position(s) so you could lower it, then if needed you selected the low corner and raised that so the coach was at its lowest level position. In short, everything worked because you were in every position and you exercised everything so you know the systems functioned.

Today, despite being an honest upstanding citizen you aired up the coach and you verified you have auxiliary air. You moved the level low selector to the ride height and nothing happened. So you did the next logical thing, you went into manual mode and tried to operate each of the manual position solenoids since you know a failure of the ride height solenoid coil or valve could have been why it did not initially rise. When none of the solenoids operated by virtue of moving the level low rotary switch you knew you have a different problem than just a failed solenoid valve or coil on the road solenoid.

If I have it right the common fault is the rotary switch is not getting power, or if it is, that power is not going to the solenoid valve coils which is why nothing is happening. To verify that air up the coach and make a jumper to put voltage from any source (I don’t know if your leveling system is set up for 12 or 24 volts so check please) onto the second solenoid coil down from the top. That should be the ride height since I think you have a 4 valve set up.

With power to the coil the coach should come up to ride height at all corners. The answer then is to start working your way backwards from the rotary switch to find out where the power is interrupted. If you have it at the switch the problem could be internal to the switch, but my guess is that all positions are unlikely to fail at once. I would have suggested you check at the up/down switch, but checking directly at the ride height coil should verify that is not the culprit.

Hector might want to jump in here to correct my logic if necessary.

As Jon pointed out, check the coils for the correct voltage Roger. On mine, it left the factory with all 24v and then Liberty changed some out to 12v, so check the label for voltage.

Thanks Tom for the reminder and will do so tomarrow, however I doubt that to be the problem.I have never had this problem in 5 yrs with this bus,and never had the solenoids off,so doubt that that is it.I am leaning towards a power problem from the selector valve as I am getting voltage to the 2nd solenoid when in drive postion, the power from that wire is gone when I select either port/starbord or front. I am not reading power in any of the other wires into the stack when turning the selector valve and/or the up/down rocker switch. Our friend Hector seems to think I have a selector or rocker switch problem. I have Aux air just fine as the horns and psgr floor slide work just fine. I will play some more in morning. There is also a filter mounted on the front wall of the compartment that is probably impossible to get too,but may have to dig into. Of course it is hot out so time spent on it is somewhat limited. In the mean time,no travel as it is sitting quite low. Thanks J & T ,I will follow up as I make some progress.

Rodger, Don’t make the project more complex than needed. Since Hector and I appear to agree the issue is electric and is associated with the rotary switch, just verify that by running a jumper to the solenoid coils for verification, and then assuming that proves the theory, start trying to follow the power source from the rotary switch back until you find the opening in the circuit. I don’t know but suspect you can pull the electric diagram from the Prevost site to help with your search efforts. Look for a bad circuit breaker, relay fuse or connection.

BTW, if you run a jumper to the solenoid coils you can raise the coach a little so it is easier on your back trying to follow wires.

Rodger in our year coaches we have four solenoids and the newer ones have five. The fifth one on ours is a Norgren valve with a electrical operated shuttle not air like all the others on the coach. That norgren could be stuck in the exhaust position and not allowing air to enter the other solenoids or not getting electricity.

VOILA! Made some headway….the bus now is going to ride height ok. That said, with the Level Low poised to raise/lower in Port/Forward/Starboard, they all go UP ok, but not DOWN. Yikes. Put it back to ride height and the bus settles down to even ride height. Pulled panel with Level Low selector and up/down rocker switch. The rocker switch is getting 24 vdc from selector but when pushing up/down, not getting signals while pushing rocker switch to energize. Same on outside of the solenoids. I put 24 vdc to valve individual and they click and seem to work as I can even see slight movement. Soooo in AM Monday will call Prevost to order new up/down rocker and probably get new rotary selector while I am at it. A google search is not coming up with a good part number form side of rocker switch. I will try to see if I can show a pic. These old arthritic fingers are gonna get a work out doing this one.

Roger, sounds excellent. If you want to play a little, (I don’t have access to your wiring diagram) I suspect your up / down switch has voltage in, and as you said it works in the up position. So reverse the up and down wires and if it goes down, when you press the “up”, and nothing happens when you push the “down”, just buy a new up / down switch. Of course you can check it with a volt or ohm meter, but that is not as much fun as watching it go the wrong way when you push the switch.

I think the rotary switch is a little pricey and if you don’t need it you can put the savings towards fuel.
