  • Websato making lots of noise?

Posted by Bill on May 3, 2014 at 12:58 am

Just last night we noticed that the websato was making a lot more noise than normal. It’s hard to describe but it sounds like a loud fan or pump perhaps… it’s not always but it seems near the end of the burn cycle it gets really loud and then turns off…

I was outside tonight when my wife turned it on for the kids showers and I noticed a pretty big cloud of white smoke that cleared up after a few minutes… so not sure if they are related or not.

It’s still heating the bus and water… Any suggestions?

    Thanks

On my Webasto system there are three sources of noise. Inside is the noise of the fans at the heat exchangers. I suspect you can rule anything associated with them out.

Outside I have the Webasto itself which will have fan and fuel pump noise. Additionally if Marathon set the Webasto up as Liberty did you will have some type of coolant circulating pump. The first step I would take is to let your ears lead you to the source of the noise you feel is different or louder than normal.

Once you have isolated what part of the outside components is making the new noise you can determine your next step. BTW changes in the noise level or tone of components is usually an early indicator that something is starting to fail so it is good that you noticed it and can deal with service or repairs on your terms instead of having to react.

I just left the Marathon factory where they addressed my noisy Webasto. There is a two-part plastic coupler (don’t know the official name) that had worn and was loose and thus vibrating. The bearings also were a bit loose. So these components were replaced and the Webasto is a lot quieter.

    Ken,

Thanks… per JON’s email it’s definately coming from the burner unit… I have an email into Leon at Marathon to see what he suggests…. had another issue pop up today on the way to Zion with the big alternator… not sure if it’s a bad relay or the big alternator died… Made the mistake yesterday of commenting to the wife… how well everything was working on the bus…

We are heading towards Canada and then Alaska in the next few weeks… trying to find the Canadian Prevost Factory service locations to see if I can get both things looked at… Anyone know those off hand? I tried their website but it just lets you search for all authorized shops…. I want to go for a Prevost location like Nashville…etc…

    Thanks

    Bill

When our coach stops charging it could be a number of things, so before assuming your alternator (assuming it is a 50DN) has quit look for a broken wire. More than one of us have had the field wire break at the alternator or the voltage regulator. If that wire is secure and you are comfortable working on the electrical system you can run a jumper between the alternator field terminal and a 12 or 24 volt power source. Which one depends on how your converter uses or sets up the DC voltage system.

By running the jumper you will see the voltage output from the alternator start to climb out of control (be prepared to pull the jumper wire before it gets too high) or not be there at all. If the voltage at the alternator output starts to climb the regulator is likely the problem. If it doesn’t the alternator is likely the problem.

The reason for being able to do a quick check like this yourself is the alternator is an easy and quick change out involving a screw driver, something anyone can do and a replacement from Prevost can come overnight. A 50DN alternator is not such an easy replacement and requires a strong back.
