Webasto Troubleshooting
Posted by Archived on March 17, 2017 at 6:46 pmNeed some trouble shooting tips. I religiously start my webasto every few weeks just to make sure it fires. In the past I’ve replaced filters, nozzles, and photocell and it keeps on chugging. This winter I experienced a few false starts and cleaned overthing as well as replaced the nozzle. Today it would not fire. Pump motor runs as usual. I can smell diesel being dumped into the chamber. But no ignition. What is my next step?

I just had mine out on the bench recently and rather than make guesses, I’ll wait for Rudy. Among several things on mine, bad coil, never had that before.

You can pull the screws out of the top of the ignition coil and see if during the start up you are getting voltage, no voltage bad ignition coil…..Your problem getting more and more intermitant would lead me down that path more than other things if you are getting fuel spray…

A failed or intermittant coil will cause the burner to start for 20 or 30 seconds, try to fire spraying fuel for 5 or 6 seconds, then fault due to no fire, purge for 2 to 3 minutes and shut down. A faulted burner will not restart till the burner switch is turned off and turned back on.
One test of the coil is to remove the four screws that hold the coil to the burner case. Lift the coil up and disconnect the two bullet connectors. Use a jumper to connect the brown wire to the coil to ground. Use a second jumper to touch power to the other wire to the coil. Listen for the coil to arc, a frying sound. Do this 100 times. The coil must arc all 100 times. Any one failure indicates coil replacement.
This is not a 100 percent test but will catch many failing coils. If problem persists and wiring harness is in good order, I replace the coil.
If one is nearby me, I will loan the replaced coil long enough for the problem to reapear. If it goes away, I have guessed correctly and will charge for the coil. If problem reapears, I will remove the loaner coil and seek another solution. I am at Exit 800 on I-10 east of Houston if loaning parts will help anyone.
If one needs assistance with this test, I am at the following number during the waking hours of the day:
7 one 3 8 one 8 3234

When I added the new control box both zones working. Now, bedroom and bath zone, no fans. Front works fine

Ernie,
The Control Unit (brain box) for the Webasto burner does not control interior heating. But interior thermostats do. Good luck sorting it out.

Did some troubleshooting of the coil based on the excellent information above. Upon removal of the coil for tests I discovered some insulation deterioration of the brown supply wire. A little shrink later the unit fired like a champ and went through 4-5 cycles of hot water heating so I assume the problem is resolved…..for now. Thank s you all.
