Webasto – Scary Find
My Webasto decided to give me trouble and would not re-light after the first cycle. Narrowed down to the thermostat control, thermostat over temp or the brain box after talking with Rudy. Tried a new brain box first, had one in stock and that was the easiest thing to do first. Made no difference so the thermostat’s were the culprit. Picked up both Thermostats, fuse over temp and nozzle at Parliament.
Cleaned the chamber and photo cell, replaced the nozzle, adjusted the electrodes and checked all the fittings. When I removed the thermostat cover got a big surprise, some short cut moron bypassed the over temp sensor and removed from fitting. This over temp fuse is the last defense should the heater overheat and is designed to shut it down at 220 degree’s. Replaced the 2 thermostat’s and installed new over temp fuze and all is good.
You might want to check your’s and it’s a real bitch to reach on a Marathon H.

Good catch! That could have been a real disaster if it would have resulted in a fire. Then you would have had no choice but to get another bus….

that I have been fighting with lately and I am glad to see it because it confirms that I am not quite as stupid
as I thought I might be.
Whenever I add more than 1 photo to a post, after I hit the post buttom and go back to my post,
I find that usually the first photo is replicated and my 2nd or 3rd photo no longer show-up in the post.

So Tom what do you think the problem was? The shorted fuse would not have stopped it from firing a second time. I have had the same problem for over ten years with my bus and I have replaced all three under that box.
I was working on it two weeks ago. I found a mouse nest under the burner that would have caught fire if it fired up.

The bypassed fuse had nothing to do with it, I was just making a point that someone had butchered the safety device.

Do you access those wires thru the Webasto? Mine is probably located where yours is, right in front of the driver’s side radiator.
And why would someone mess with that in the first place???

No, the thermostat’s and fuse are located on top of the Webasto towards the rear.
The reason someone bypassed the fuze was either to force the Webasto to run because of a failed fuse or to cheap to buy a new one.

Tom is that pipe above it Hot and if so any sign of overheating the box causing the thermostat to open?

It is less likely home brewed fixes will be used on coaches when they are new and the converter and Prevost are doing repairs under warranty.
But when a coach is no longer under warranty for the life of me I cannot understand why owners will allow people who are clearly reaching for straws to touch their coach. Over the years I have seen many examples of absolutely crappy work on some very nice coaches, because someone asked a “mechanic” to fix something. The mechanic likely had no knowledge or training on a Prevost conversion.
The screw ups included reversing air lines to suspension valves, bypassing safety systems, wiring in devices without providing circuit protection, the use of substandard materials, or just lousy work quality.
If you own an older coach, please get service from people that know and understand the coach. If you need to repair or modify something, you or the technicians should strive to do the work correctly AND DOCUMENT THE CHANGES SO THE NEXT GUY KNOWS WHAT IT GOING ON.
On more than one occasion I have taken a look at a coach for sale, and have seen evidence of the crappy type of work I described above, stopped looking at the coach right then, and told the potential buyer to walk away.

To echo Jon, a member paid a goodly sum to have me drive 500 miles to solve a Webasto problem that he had for as long as he has owned his H3.
Took me a day and a half, an overnight stay in the bus, up at midnight to see why the burner faultled again and again at 6 am to finally discover the problem and fix it in 5 minutes.
Turned out someone worked on the Webasto before he purchased it. They were dealing with the thermostats pictured by Tom. The Control Thermostat was plugged into the High Limit harness. The High Limit Thermostat was plugged onto the Control harness. Therefore, when the Control Thermostat cycled the burner off, it opened the High Limit circuit faulting the Control Unit (brain box). A simple re-plugging of the thermostats solved the problem.
Getting to the thermostats is a real bear as mentioned by Tom but once the burner was removed and wedged myself in there, I could see the improper connections. Never crossed my mind to look at this till nothing else worked and all other items checked out fine. Pulled some hair out and a really long fast trip.
I enjoyed my visit with this very kind owner and am in great hopes he will stop by for a quick visit as he returns north later this season. I will feed him well.

Hey Tom,
So just how long ago did you leave Nancy alone long enough with the coach to dabble with the Webasto. Tough way to go about getting those slides she wants. Would it not be easier for you to just get Nancy what she wants and then you would not have anything to worry about, plus you would have another coach on which to chase gremlins.
