  • Webasto Fuel Filter

Posted by Archived on April 20, 2019 at 5:20 pm

I changed my Webasto fuel filter today, using an identical Duralast Universal fuel filter (FF5-16DL). This is a simple clear plastic 5/16″ filter like you would see on a lawn tractor, etc.

Out of curiosity I looked up the specs for it and found it is for gasoline. Looking around for other options I found a WIX filter that specifically states for gas and diesel. The filtering media looks like a fine mesh screen instead of the folded paper looking Duralast one.

Obviously the original paper style lasted for some time, most likely well over a year. Just to be safe I have ordered the diesel specific WIX filters.

But is this critical? We are not talking about close tolerances of an injector, just the Webasto fuel nozzle.

For comparison, the AquaHot on our previous SOB used a screw on fuel filter similar to a small oil filter. Maybe over-kill?

It should be a 10 micron filter Aqua Hot uses a Racor or a general filter or a Napa filter, General has no water separator the other 2 do. Aqua Hot uses Webasto burners.

    Thanks Art…

but why does a 350 micron spray nozzle need a 10 micron filter??

Also, the Danfloss nozzle has a built-in filter. The one I pulled out had no visible clogging.

    Inquiring minds want to know…

My first coach had that little plastic filter and it worked fine. My Liberty coaches have both had spin on filters. They also work fine. I am pretty sure that the small plastic one would plug up faster if you had bad fuel, but that is not much of a problem today if you get fuel at a high volume location.

Prevost TN did my first Webasto nozzle and filter change and they had the plastic filter in stock and made no comments on it, so it must be used regularly.

Roger, if you read this, have you had issues or changed it out to something else?

I guess if it has made it 14 years with the small filter, I’ll stay with it. It is very easy to change and cheap.

I did order a couple of filters spec’ed for diesel. I’ll use them from now on. I don’t want the fluted paper media designed for gasoline to deteriorate and cause a problem, but here again, it seemed to have been OK.

    Thanks guys.

In the older Aqua Hot units they used the little plastic filter on the old stainless 431 and 100-01S models then because of water in fuel they went to the Racorfilter with water trap on the bottom, then in the last few years they went to the General model G filter larger easy to change and cheaper. But why not for around around $50 bucks put a better filter that is easy to change and protect the Webasto. That silver nozzle is the old company that was used, the gold with stainless tip (Danfoss) has been used for the last 4 or 5 years, the silver nozzles started giving problems. the nozzle 0.35 tip on it to atomize the fuel and if it gets plugged up it will smoke, change the filter and nozzle once a year and it will run great for a long time. I just worked on a unit with almost 2500 hours and installed a bearing kit and serviced unit and like new again.

Thanks Art. I’m now using the newer nozzle.

I think our bus has spent most of its life in FL and warm climates. I did not see an hour meter on the Webasto like we had on the AquaHot. On our SOB RV the AquaHot had a lot of hours and I’ve experienced bearing failure/replacement. The Webasto on our Prevost spins up quickly and quietly, not making the dying noises I became familiar with.

Rudy trained me on performing the annual maintenance and I’ve always been a believer in monthly exercising the burner.

    Don’t believe all you hear.

I did not eat 4 dozen oysters, I only had 42.

Rudy talked to me about oyster fest for next year, and tie it in to the Florida trip next year
