Webasto and fuel injector additives
Posted by steve on December 17, 2016 at 12:57 pmHi all, I have a 1999 Prevost C.C. and need advice about using a fuel additive. Is it alright to use Lucas fuel injector cleaner and conditioner in the fuel tank. Will the Webasto be affected or is it alright to use. The Qt. bottle says one bottle per 100 gallons. Thanks for you answers in advance. Steve

Why would you need to use that unless you are where it’s cold out ???
-
Peter,I don’t want to use it for the cold, its a fuel injector cleaner. Steve

Why do you think you need to clean the injectors, I have never put anything in the fuel in 30 years unless it was very cold and then I put in Howes diesel cond for it not to gel if I had summer weight fuel in when it turned cold
-
What Peter said. The benefits of most additives are to the seller’s wallet. This is sure to get some different opinions, but I never saw the engine manufacturers do anything but define the grade of fuel, and they never suggested STP or Bardall or snake oil.
-
Peter: How cold is cold? If I have diesel in the tank I bought in the fall, at what temp now should I be concerned? If I plan on operating the coach at a temp below what you think is the threshold, what shoujld I put in the diesel to keep it from jelling up?

While jelling is a disctinct possibility we refueled in Florida many years ago, and when we headed home we had about 1100 miles to go to reach our home in western NY. The day we left bitter cold extended across our path. I don’t remember where it started but we stopped for the night in southern WV and when we stopped it was minus 21. When we woke up it was minus 26. We drove the next day and the warmest it got was minus 20. I have no clue if the FL fuel was a winter blend.
The engine never missed a beat although we had to have passed more than a thousand trucks on the side of the road that were stopped because their fuel jelled.
Except for the bottom, our fuel tanks are protected. They are surrounded with the panels at the back of the bays, the bus floor and the walls between bays. Return fuel supplies warmth to the tank(s). I think Peter is being cautious, but if you are concerned there are additives specifically to minimize the possibility of jelling fuel.

I am being cautious but I would use below -10 , but I have never had it gel up because it is so warm in the engine bay and the fuel water separator is in the engine bay that’s where it will wax up , yesterday at ranch it was -19 with the wind blowing so about -30 and the tractor gelled up at the filter water separator in morning when I went to start it , so I just took off bowel cleaned wax out and put some 911 in filter bowel and all was good it will also clean the wax out of the injectors and all was good , the bus would only have trouble when sitting overnite and no heat on in engine bay like the webasto on and pre heat the motor it gives off a lot of heat so there is no worries when driving ,but I would carry a jug of 911 just in case
The tractor had 3/4 tank of summer fuel left over from summer time that’s why it gelled up ,we have winter fuel hear at ranch so we usually never have a problem with fuel but that slipped by

Diesel fuel #2 starts to crystalize at +5 degrees F. As the ambient goes down from there, the first thing to fail will be the fuel filter due to the build up of parafin wax. Prevention is to use one ounce per three gallons of fuel of Power Service that can be bought now at Farm and Fleet for eight dollars that treats 250 gallons. I think Peter’s “911” is another name for Power Service. “911” in my world is something completely different.
-
Power service has a white bottle for treatment of fuel to prevent fuel gelling and a Red bottle called Diesel 911 that De ices frozen fuel filters and Reliquefies gelled fuel that’s what I was talking about
-
Does Diesel 911 also prevent jelling? Can I carry only Diesel 911 and use it to prevent jelling as well as to “unjell” fuel? Or should I carry both?
If the temp drops and the fuel jells, and then the temps come up into say the teens and twenties, will the fuel unjell by itself? I presume the parafin would have to be cleaned.
-
I doubt you will need either but u can carry one of each if u want
