Water Thoughts
Lots of coaches have RO systems installed, including mine. While the RO produces about the best filtered water available, I have never cared for the taste, or lack of. The systems strip all manner of things, both good and bad, including minerals. I was recently advised to replace the finishing filter (after the membrane) with an alkaline filter which adds minerals back into the water which gives the fluid a taste of spring water rather than the first cousin to distilled. I can say these filters really work well, especially helps out coffee! Personally I installed an I-Spring filter unit which has a 6 month change interval.
Guess picking up water from all manner of places has its risks. The most annoying to me was the constant build up of calcium on faucets and shower heads. Couple of years ago I installed an Eddy (made in the UK) in my home in Arizona (we have really high TDS’s)… the Eddy.sets up a magnetic field that essentially de-scales the water. My first thought was that this was snake oil but with a 1 year no questions asked money back guarantee and a lifetime warranty I gave it a go. Amazing results…. I have now installed one in my coach. I am aware that scale is rare in coaches, however it is not uncommon in the water heaters. This unit removes and keeps scale away.

I pulled the RO unit from my bus as well. It weighed nearly 200 lbs., took up a lot of room and wasted a lot of water while in operation. What does the magnetic unit weigh?
p.s.: I wouldn’t have posted, except that I really have to ask –are you serious about the Chiron?

The Eddy weighs…on a heavy day, maybe 8 ounces. Google it for full details, I am impressed with it…

Sorry for the confusion but I did not remove the RO, simply added to it. As mentioned, on advice from my water guy, I replaced the finishing filter after the membrane with an alkaline filter….put back minerals into the water to mock spring water.
I did have several RO issues, leaking and the like, however I solved them all with a membrane change. Pretty certain that the life span for a membrane in a coach is maybe 1 year……for a variety of reasons, not the least of which is infrequent use. The membrane clogs up fro drying out or whatever, the brine flows freely. Should you have an air gap faucet it will leak out of the faucet vent, if not it backpressures the system an leaks abound..
Another often overlooked issue is the RO storage tank as well as the accumulator tanks located downstream from the coaches water pumps. These things last maybe 5 years before the rubber or neoprene baffle commences to leak. Should you RO only produce a couple of cups of water at a time…you need a new tank. Should your water pumps run all of the time (when not connected to city water) you probably need a new accumulator tank (s)
