Water out of lower slide motor area
Posted by Walter on March 13, 2017 at 12:16 am
Hi All…There is a water leak that comes out of the hole where those lines come out of. This is the rear lower salon slide motor. You access it in the 3rd drivers side bay. Here is the photo:

I’m not sure if it’s rain (slide has been IN for the past couple months – but it has rained) or from AC condensation. Used the AC for an overnight trip yesterday and today. The Towed’s maiden voyage! It’s warmed up in CA. It also comes out of the slide gear box and drops off the bolt: for

Anyone else have this happen? I’m going to Marathon in a couple weeks… but always good the check with the community!

I would say you have a domestic water leak, or you are getting a leak through the side panels of the coach…however the location is directly under the slide out and would have to be along the side panel to the rear of the slide then the water would have to follow the air line…stranger things have happened..Is there water there all the time or only after a rain? Is the water pump left on or is it shut off while not in use?

Hi Jeff,
So far – I’ve only noticed it after rain. Even with the slide IN. This time though, I noticed it 2 weeks after a rain, after a day trip about 2 hours worth of driving away, and when I got back and was dumping the bus. It was werid… like all of a sudden as I was standing there it started dripping.
I did run the AC’s the 2 days (it’s warm in CA right now) but…. hard to say if it was condensate or note.
I leave the water pump on basically all the time, so I don’t think it’s from the water system as it’s not dripping most if the time – only after rains (usually) this time was a little strange because of the fact that it hasn’t raing for so long, AND we drove around for a few hours…. it was totally odd that it started dripping pretty after all of that.
How does one get into that area to take a look?

I was able to see that there is a littel “pan” with a dropped area connected to a drain hose. U stuck a wire up the drian hose to make sure it’s clear. I also noticed that those air lines USED to be silconed in there. The silicone is now broken out. I wonder if it was always meant to be a pan to catch drain water from something.
I will be going to prevost sometime in the near future to look at the rear slide roof – then I’ll ask them about this one too. Fingers crossed it isn’t TOO expensive! Though…. still less than a new bus.

Walt,
Did you have the bus pressure tested for loose panels when you bought it? The location would make me suspect that water is getting inside from behind the trim strip that covers the area where the lower stainless panel’s top edge meets the upper fiberglass panel’s lower edge.
Now I have never had that trim peice off so I don’t know how well the two panels match up to seal the seam. It may be possible that there could be a void between the two edges that would allow water to enter the framework. Also, even though the stainless panel appears nice and tight, a small area of the adhesive could be loosen enoughh to allow water to pass
The best way to prevent water from getting behind the trim strip and into the inside is to do as Jon has suggerted and seal the top edge of it with a good caulking sealant.

Pressure tested? No. We bought before I read too much on the internet about all this. I remember what Jon said now. What type of caulk would be best… to hold up to the elements? That is probably good insurance either way! -
I would strongly suggest you do not consider trying to caulk your coach yourself.
Before you do anything you need to determine if you do have an issue with skin adhesion. Prevost has a process that pressurizes the entire coach and allows the identification of any loose panels or sources of water penetration. At that point you know what you are dealing with and what steps, if any need to be taken. It has been a painful and expensive process to get to the point where problems can not only be identified, but can be forever resolved and to think a tube of caulking is going to make a problem such as water infiltration go away is wrong. It has been found that water entry can and will create serious problems, and if not correctly repaired can lead to serious issues such as mold, mildew, and water retention such as in the slide structure.

Jon’s advice is wrong again. I would at least calk the trim peice above the area that may be leaking. This will help prevent water from entering the coach during the interim until you can get the bus pressure tested. The calk is easily removed if need be and will not interefere with the panel inspection as the lower edge of the trim peice is left open.
The mark of a good forum is when all the members are encouraged to contribute their learned knowledge to the benefit of all the other members. Not once have I made a post on this forum that Jon hasn’t taken issue with. A while back Jon banned a good friend of mine from this forum simply because he disagreed with Jon on the merits of the fuel card program from which Jon derives income. Perhaps he considers that friendship when he “disses” my posts, I hope not as that’s no way to run a forum.
Jon regards this forum as his fiefdom and makes money off its advertisers and coach listings. He considers himself as the “know it all” ruler. So what we have here is a forum where relatively few members adventure a post while the major membership is reluctant to particibate in contributing their knowledge to help solve their fellow member’s issues. A better name for the forum may be “Ask Jon”.
I’ve tried to contribute what little knowledge I possess to assist fellow members here but I’m tired of Jon taking issue with every post I make. This will be my last post of this forum…….

That was way harsh Chuck but keep the criticism coming because I can take it and because it is not a bad thing to point out errors in advice.
I stand behind the advice regarding skin issues and leaks. I have a little help on advice like that because the folks at Prevost have shown Tom and I how they are dealing with this issue and why it is so critical to deal with it correctly. We spent a lot of time learning about water infiltration, how to detect the source and how continued water penetration can end up causing issues with end up totalling a coach.
Regarding your friend and his representation about where and how we make money on this site try not to form opinions until you learn the entire story. He is no longer here for reasons I am sure he will not share. If he sends my email to him to you it explains why he is not on this site. In fact if he is willing to share that email you can even post it here.

Good bye Chuck, you and your friend are both liars about Jon receiving any income from the Profit Tools Fuel Program and I hope each of you enjoy your bitter fantasy. And you are right, that was your last post.
-
Chuck won’t be posting again or reading and that was my doing, Jon had no input in that decision. As you all know, we rarely interfere with any posting unless it has malicious intent and that was part of Chucks message regarding the fuel program. While Jon and I can take the heat, as you saw by Jon’s response, why Chuck decided to once again spread the ole fabricated lie from several years ago is beyond reasoning.
We’ll just chalk this up as poor judgement and move on.
