  • Water Heater on 89 Marathon

Posted by Ken on May 20, 2013 at 7:58 pm

Okay, I cannot figure this water heater thing out… 89 Marathon conversion. Has a fancy water heater… when I drive the coach the water gets nice and hot…. when it sits, no hot water. I figured there must be a switch somewhere to turn on the Hot Water heater, but I cannot find one ANYWHERE… no switch noda…..

I’m not familiar with your vintage, but there should at least be a 120v electric element controlled by a switch or breaker. Not sure if you have Webasto, but if you do, it also heats the water.

Have Aqua Hot on mine. Have electric water heater and haven’t found a switch for it either. My breaker Panel has one breaker that’s marked with water heater.

I don’t have a Marathon. There is a switch or at least a circuit breaker to control it. If the circuit breaker is on do you have a meter to check for voltage at the hot water heater? If you have voltage at the hot water heater and the water isn’t already hot, then it is either the thermostat or heating element.

If no one with a Marathon of your vintage chimes in, I’d call Marathon if you don’t have voltage at the hot water heater.

Different vintage but we have both a 120V breaker and a low-voltage Techlink switch that operates a relay in the wiring closet. The breaker is in the main 120V panel below the entertainment system, the low voltage Techlink button is in the Techlink panel in the stateroom. If your coach is pre Techlink, you might only have the 120V breaker.

The first step is to figure out what you have. Do you have what we would consider a conventional water heater, and if so are there wires going to it?

If you cannot find a water heater but have AquaHot or an equivalent are there controls for an electric heater?

It sounds silly now that I think back, but I learned a whole lot about my coach (pre-internet) just by opening panels and sitting and looking at it, trying to figure out where pipes were going and coming from, what the various components were, and what made them work. I’m not suggesting you spend time trying to mentally create schematics for a circuit board, but instead you are looking at the big picture to get a sense of what’s where and what it does.

What Jon said. I need to do that also. Take panels out and see what goes where. My coach is totally enclosed and you can’t see anything behind. Probably don’t wanna see behind.

On the Raritan unit there is a red reset button under the inspection cover on the side of the heater, you might try that. The heating element is a replaceable screw in item if the tank is not leaking.

I am not positive on an 89, but it should have 2 Atwood 10.5 gallon water heaters stacked in bay #4 PS. These get heated 3 ways, by a heat exchanger when driving, by electricity when plugged in or genset running, and by a heat exchanger with the Webast when dry camping. There will be a breaker for the 120V in your breaker panel that should be on. A common problem can be the reset has tripped due to an over-temp if the coach has been run hot. You need to remove a small metal cover on the left side of the water heater to access it. You can go online, and pull up a manual for these heaters if you do not have one in the coach.

My red button circuit breaker popped on me on one of my Atwoods while camping. Jim (Coloradobus) advised using a pencil with the eraser to use to reset the button due to wire connections in close . Good thought, good luck
