Water Heater Leak?
On our way home from Florida last Florida, I noticed a leak coming from under the area of the water heater. The water was hot so I’m assuming that it was coming from the water heater. We have a 1998 Liberty Elegant Lady XL45.
I turned off the water heater at the panel. The leak seemed to stop but I realize now that we have a slow leak – a single room temp drip every second or two.
I cannot find any leaks from any of the various copper or pvc pipes.
AFAIK the water heater has never been replaced.
Questions:
- Does this in fact sound like a water heater issue?
- If so, is a repair possible or is a replacement required?
- We have another trip planned in less than two weeks. Can the water heater be bypassed safely? It is the heat exchanger type – should the exchanger valves be closed or can they be left on?
- Any other thoughts?

Replace the pop off valve and shut the coolant loop.
eng coolant will overheat the water and wear out the pop off valve.

Joshua, his model year should have a solenoid cutoff triggered by a snap switch that automatically closes the water heater loop from the engine.

I’m currently dealing with the same thing at the moment with pressure relief valve leaking. Haven’t moved in months, so it’s not an engine overheat issue.
From the looks of your picture, I can clearly see a “Drip” next to the fresh water tank red shut off valve. Is this where it’s leaking?
I don’t have a hose on the pressure relief valve like you do, so mine is leaking all over the bay at the moment. You’d know if it was leaking from that valve as the ground would be wet from where it goes through the floor.

Just an FYI… The Raritan temperature and pressure “pop off” valve is NOT the typical valve that is available at Home Depot etc.
The Raritan uses a 75 PSI T & P valve.

Liberty coach used spigot style shutoffs for the coolant loop through the water heater. if you noticed the leak after driving the coach and it was hot water dripping it would not be unlikely for the pop off valve to be bad. verify where the water is coming from but in my experience that is the first place to look, as well as the cheapest and easiest fix.

Before chasing leaks verify the accumulator tank works and has the correct bladder pressure.
That device absorbs the expansion of the water as it heats and if the bladder has collapsed it can push water out at all weak points.
