There is one big campground in Banff, Tunnel Mountain, just outside of town. Pretty easy access, you park on the side of the road. You can always get spots there but might have to move from one site to another each day.

Lake Louise, a must see place, gets really crowded and they won’t allow cars up to the lake/lodge most days after 8 am. There is a shuttle bus from a parking lot on Hwy 1. If you are up for some easy hiking, there are two tea houses towards the back of the lake. About 2 hours each way. Very nice but even the hike is busy.

If all campgrounds are full in the area, there is a large parking lot on Hwy 1 (with shuttle service) a few miles before Lake Louise where you can stay overnight for a small fee. No services. We spent a week there and at Tunnel Mountain a couple of years back. Nice but busy.

The Icefield Parkway to Jasper is great, Jasper itself was ok.

West of Lake Louise are the double switchback train tunnels. Remarkable to see trains go thru them. Also beyond there a few miles is Yoho National Park. Takawkaw Falls in spectacular.

As long as advice is flowing….two questions:

1. How early in the season can you visit to beat the crowds?

2. If we want to stop at Glacier first, will I be bummed if the high pass isn’t open yet? If I am going to Canada anyway, can I just see the northern half from there?

would generally like to do the month of June but I saw that often the pass isn’t open till almost July.

When staying at Tunnel Mountain, be careful about the shore water pressure. It is very high.
