Detroit vent line kit # 23528624 is to let out oil from large alternator to the return. The kit has a new plate to replace old oil filler and has new ss hose and fittings, about $170 bucks, problem is you also need new style oil filler and belt auto tensioner and I guess Prevost wants a arm and a leg for this stuff. Why can’t I take my old oil filler off drill and tap it and get ss line and some fitting and put line in same spot as the plate ?

You could drill and tap the old plate if you just wanted to do the vent upgrade. But I’d consider doing the automatic belt tensioner upgrade as well. The old style tensioner puts a big side load on the alternator bearings and is difficult to adjust just right.

Check the bearings in the old tensioner. Mine were shot and they started shredding the alternator belt every few hundred miles. No more issues with the new tensioner.

    Art,

Having automatic belt tensioner with serpentine belt makes a reliable upgrade along with peace of mind that all components stay correctly in place at 1500 +/- rpm.

Tensioners have a service life appox 100 K miles along with good history of reliability plus belts last longer.

I tried the larger oil return hose. Didn’t help oil leak problems. I say save your money and go to air-cooled alternator when required.

I’d be really curious about the failure rate of alternators. I am not considering an oil leak a failure, but I would want to know the economics of the various alternator options we are now seeing.
