Vanner Equalizer Failure
In early July the BAL light came on during my monthly exercise drive. A year or more before I installed a ScanGaugeD and can monitor digitally what voltage the ECM is seeing. It normally indicates 13.6v to 13.9v. This day is was 12v to 12.2. My dash chassis alternator analog voltmeter was still reading 27ish.Back home I looked up and performed the trouble shooting steps in the Vanner.com online manual for my ole 1/24/95 model 60-100 equalizer. It had failed, no output. I removed & opened it up and found it badly damaged inside. No saving it.I tested the chassis batteries, the two on the left were 12.2, two on right were 13.0. So I removed all 4 chassis batteries and charged them fully.The next day I tested them individually with 2 different load testers. All were good so I knew a bad battery hadn’t taken out the equalizer, old age had. It was safe to order another.I called Vanner and the tech told me I had 2 choices, the newer model 66-100 or 70-100. I knew the 66-100 would be a plug-n-play & a direct bolt in replacement, but I went with 70-100 requiring different mounting and 3 new battery cables. I just like its looks better.I ordered the new equalizer from PrevostParts, <$800 which is competitive. I made the 3 new cables myself. I already had all the necessary tools and materials.I couple of days later I had it back together and took it on another exercise drive. All was good again and has been since. -

That melted mess looks scary. Did you see any signs that the heat from the melted mess attempted to spread outside the vannor box?

Don – I searched this group for ScanGaugeD , ScanGauge D and Scan Gauge D and no results were found.
Did you make a post on it?

In spite of being a drag racer, Don is my hero. Updates like this are so helpful in keeping these elderly road warriors going without parting with enough money to put somebody’s kid through college. Even sprint car racers have to mind their nickles. Keep up the good work Don. Mike

Our bus does not have a Detroit Diesel Pro Driver, so when Don told me about the ScangeGaugeD a year and a half ago I immediately purchased one and installed it. I am extremely happy with it, I have it on the dash right above the steering wheel and watch it just as much as my other gauges. It does great for keeping track of mileages, mpg etc… And it stores trouble codes for diagnostic use.

After seeing Don’s Vanner EQ I pulled mine apart and took cover off back and it looked and smelled fine, I found a new Vanner 66-100 Equalizer on E-Bay got it for $ 425 free shipping close to me. I will save that one in my extra parts Just in case mine dies some day

Do you think the new design, other than liking the looks better, is more robust than the older model?

I decided to install new unit,Vanner 66-100 Rev:E SN/18303-477282 Looking at instructions and schematics shows adding fuse or breaker into system as per drawing, What size and rated fuses should I install, It shows max input current 24vdc 53 amps and output current 12vdc 0-100 amps

Are these the right kind of breakers 187 degrees 60 amp for 24v side?? and 60 amp for 24v side?? I have 4 group 29 batteries,Not sure how to figure out what size breaker I might need, On old vanner it shows 70amp on 24v side and on ground side, there is a post that shows adding fuses on vanner monitor lower pic

I’m adding a 80 amp and 120 amp resettable circuit breaker devices to the 24v and 12v equailizer battery cables per Vanner installation recommendation.

I’m almost finished installing my new Vanner 66-100 equalizer and I had a Vanner EM70D monitor I installed with fuses, I had ordered 1 amp fuses, so I have 5 amp till 1 amp fuses show I installed 80 amp 120 amp breakers on 12v and 24v #4 cables from batteries. The breakers I thought about where to mount for a while,I did not want to drill a bunch of holes in metal and a lot longer cables so I cut and bent short metal pieces out of steel 75 thousands thick 1 inch wide and 2.5 inches long seems plenty stout and drilled 1/4 inch for breaker and 5/16 for battery and added 2 red 1 foot long #4 cables and it will be covered with black plastic cover, Breakers are water proof and working temp is 180 degrees should be fine. I just have to add a couple of cable ties. Any reason it should not work ???
