  • Valve cores on inner duals

Posted by Craig on January 9, 2022 at 3:40 pm

I’m curious… It seems to me that I have 2 valve cores stacked in series on the inner duals. The outer valve core has a long tail on it. I think that this tail presses on the inner valve core. Is my understanding correct? If so, why do we need both cores? I think that the long stem on the outer core is not lining up with the inner core. I know that I am not able to inflate the inner tires.

    Thought?

My Bus inner drives had the extensions, I had nothing but issues with leaks so I pulled them out and I now use these tools. They reach right thru the holes and allow me to fill the air and check the pressure.

What Mike said. Here is a little more detail.

First, extensions are OK and usually do not contribute to leaks. They are fairly important if you use TPMS sensors and do not want to go to the trouble of using a tool to remove inner tire sensors when adjusting pressures. Tom designed a simple cheap one that works well to remove the sensor but it is easier to remove sensors and air up a tire if it has an extension on the valve stem.

However I will guarantee that valve stem extensions due to centrifugal force will flex outward and a groove will be worn in the extension which if left long enough will cause it to fail. It does not matter if you use grommets in the outer wheel hole. I have numerous grooved valve stems collected over the years and some were worn by the grommet, some worn by the wheel. The grit from the highway gets between the tire valve stem extension and the grommet or wheel and that is what will wear a hole in the extension.

If you do not use TPMS sensors, stick with the original valve stems. Use a fill through the cap tire valve stem cap and long tire chucks to reach in to check and fill inner tires. I did that for decades and it is easy once you get used to fining the valve stem in the blind.
