  • Valve adjustment timing

Posted by George on December 15, 2019 at 11:07 am

Have read Detroit operators book and no where does it reference valve adjustment.

searching forum for valve adjustment found two reference to 100,000 miles as required time for adjustment.

several indicated on XL it could be done without removing floor

and several say floor required to be removed

Is there a way to tell if the floor has to come out?

    Open rear doors.

Look straight back over the top of the engine.

If the space between the coach floor over the valve cover is less than the height of the valve cover do you see any way to lift the valve cover off to adjust valves?

If not, disassemble whatever needs to be disassembled to open the floor above the engine valve cover, or pull the engine backwards far enough to get the needed clearance above the valve cover.

In mine where the step up in rear is that’s where the access panel, mine is a 40 so it’s down on far side of bed. I had valves adjusted when I first bought it. I had to cut carpet to access bolts and where it comes out, It took me about an hour to remove cover, now I could remove it in a few minutes. Once cover is removed it’s easy access to engine.
