Value of Thermal blankets
I have had thermal blankets on the exhaust piping since I bought my bus. Put on by prior owner. Well yesterday as I was climbing so hills around Shasta Lake CA I lost turbo boost. Runs fine on flats. Started looking for the problem and took of the blanket on the left bank turbo inlet pipe and found the thing rust through. I have a feeling that the blankets on low usage engine like many of our Coaches promote accerated rusting. Also it hides the problem.
My advise is if you have blankets on your exhaust piping remove them and ckeck out your pipes, you could be surprised as to what you will find.

I am not sure I would blame the blankets Greg.
During the years we had our 8V92 I replaced three of the turbo inlet pipes plus 2 cast iron manifolds or manifold gaskets. That was over a 250,000 mile span covering 14 years. I had no asbestos blankets on my exhaust. I also had to replace one of the pipes from the turbo to the muffler as well as a muffler. They also had no blankets. I think you got more life out of yours.

Jon you could be right. I was reading something on the Wanderlodge forum that the blackets hold the moisture in causing the rust rot. Got a replacement in Yuba City CA which I will run and get tomorrow.

I ran the covering for years on my 8v92TA on the manifolds,pipe and turbo I never saw any signs of rust and they do help with the turbo boost on a 8v92 fwiw

Greg, could this condition have started by washing your engine compartment ?

150 mile round trip and the turbo inlet pipe slipped right on. I asked the guy at North Valley Desiel in Yuba City about the Thermal blankets and he asked how old was the coach and like Jon he said you got a lot of life out of those. If any one in the Sacramento area needs DD parts they NVD have 5 building with new and used parts. I got a used one for $300 + tax and a new one would cost $560. That’s a lot of money for 18″ of 4″ pipe flared on each in with a little flex in the middle.
