Using our bus in a tv production
We have been approached by a TV series film production to use our bus in a TV series that is being filmed nearby. They would drive our bus to the location, and return it the following day. Only the outside would be used.
Has anyone had any experience with doing this? We are excited by the opportunity, but a little nervous too!

If it were me… and I was open to doing it. I would be the only driver of the bus and would drive it to the location and require that I stay with the coach on set for the duration of the shoot.
I don’t think it would be an issue unless it happens to be a strict union crew they might require a union driver. If that is an issue I would allow the union driver to “shadow” me but for insurance reasons as well as lots of others no one but me would drive the bus and I absolutely wouldn’t leave the bus out of my direct supervision for even 5 minutes on TV or film set.
I am in the production business.

Thank you for the suggestions, I am going to suggest that I drive to the location, that was a bit scary and it is a union environment, so not sure how that will work. I am getting the contract today from the production company and will be checking with my insurance company!

I’ve been on my share of production sets and I agree with Bill in that you’re the only person behind the wheel and that you stay with the coach the entire time.
I also agree to check with your insurance company about using it for commercial purposes.
If you want to be very careful, check with your accountant. Since many owners have a bus registered in a LLC, that may determine how the check is made out and it could affect tax accounting as it’s now an income producing property.

It’s your bus. Tell them to accept your conditions of they can take a hike.

None of the use of your bus is worth the risk of what could happen.
I totally agree with Bill.
I had a oppurtunity to show my bus in a magazine shoot…..my attorney asked why would you open yourself to risk when someone trips., cuts there finger or bus damage …even minor damage to your bus.
Why are they not using a RV rental company ?

No other drivers of my bus and no use of my bus without me being present. Period.

Don’t forget to carry your Class B (or better) CDL and current DOT medical card. I’m sure you’ve got your vinyl DOT numbers ready to put on the side before you leave home. Sounds like you’re good to go!!!

If you seriously consider the use of your bus, you might require them to add you (and, therefore your bus) as “additionally insured” on their insurance. If something were to happen, their insurance would become primary. Just a thought….but check with someone more knowledgeable than me about this!
Fun to let them use your bus, but getting sued over a few bucks can ruin your day.

Thank you for all your suggestions. We were able to drive our coach and stay with it during the filming, the production company’s insurance covered us more than adequately. Watch for us on the NBC show A million little things, sometime in December.
