I haven’t driven US 2 in sometime, but a few decades ago spent lots of time between the Green Bay area and Houghton-Hancock MI. Two summers ago we went to Woodruff, Eagle River, Land O’Lakes, Ironwood/Hurley.

There are a number of casinos on US 2 or a short drive off of 2. We drove by a couple of them on our trip. They cater to locals, travelers, truckers, bus trips, and RV’ers. Unless I found an acceptable campground I thought would work, I’d plan my route stopping at the casinos. We’ve been to the Oneida Casino near Green Bay and the Stockbridge-Munsee Casino near Bowler WI and both had 50amp; but these are much further south than where you’re going planning to go.

Fuel? I wouldn’t be too worried. Do you use GasBuddy.com? We do to plan our fuel stops. In some cases we’ve saved 20 to 30 cents a gallon by just planning ahead and knowing the prices on Gas Buddy. While the UP is somewhat sparsely populated, there is a good amount of truck traffic and logging which of course demands diesel. The stations might be small, but you should be able to get in most of them, fill up, and get out again.

When is your trip? That area (from Ironwood MI/Hurley WI to Houghton MI) got 4″ to 7″ of rain on Saturday (6/16). There are reports of flash flooding, impassable roads, etc. So plan ahead. Most of the Sheriff’s Departments have FB pages that they post that kind of stuff to. If in doubt, call the sheriff’s department and ask. If things are OK, they want you in the neighborhood. If all hell has broken loose they don’t want you near them. They’ll be honest.

If you’re making a casual trip through the UP and don’t have a mission on US 2, I would strongly encourage you take the northern route through the UP. Sault Ste. Marie (Sault locks, bring your passport and ride the Algoma Central RR deep into the Canada wilderness on a one day trip), Marquette MI, Lanse, Baraga, Houghton, Hancock, and Copper Harbor. Some of the most beautiful scenery in the country. Interesting history (they don’t call it “Copper Country” for nothing!). Take the drive to the end of US 41 in Copper Harbor; it literally end at the water’s edge at Lake Superior, return along Lake Superior. Take a float plane or boat out to Isle Royale National Park (the most remote park in the system). Spend the night or a few days. I recommend the float plane.

When you cross from Superior WI to Duluth MN I’m sure Mark will be waiting to welcome you!

woow! thanks for all the info…. we are in Turkeyville Michigan .. yes we use Gas Buddy! we plan to work our way over the top of Michigan and over to Duluth. than to Fargo ND ,,,, we are not really on any schedule…. we left Seattle last November… and we zig zag down the west coast . turned left at LA the worked our way around the Bottom of the US until we hit water (FL) , turned left worked our way up the east coast turned left …. kinda sounds like a Nascar race. once we hit ND MT line turn left and work our way south to AZ for the winter …

any info and Roads in MN from Duluth to Fargo would be welcomed !

Last summer /fall we travelled the UP a bit following Rte. 2. We liked the Bay Mills Casino in Brimley, MI not fancy but always seems to be available . Close to Sault Ste. Marie but also a day trip to Whitefish Bay or the Picture Rocks area.

We made a point to fuel before crossing the Mackinaw Bridge so had no fuel issue.

Near Marquette we liked the Country Village RV in Ishpeming. They were very accommodating when we stayed longer due to a weather delay. Long sites with good electric. We day tripped to the Copper Peninsula/Copper Harbor.

Further west, we stayed at Penmarallter in Two Harbors. It was tight but adequate water and electric only. I would try Burlington Bay if you could get in. Loved Duluth and also the Split Rock Lighthouse and Castle Rock Brewery.

We have driven Rte 2 from Kalispell to E. Glacier which was very beautiful but not the in between section in Minnesota and North Dakota.

The UP and Northern Wisconsin had up to 5 inches of rain on Saturday night and its continued to rain today. Houghton county Michigan has told residents to shelter in place do to extreme unprecedented flooding, especially in Houghton and Hancock as some of the streets (blacktop, basecourse and all are gone).

US 2 between Ashland and Superior-Duluth is a complete washout (see picture below). Apparently there is a detour in place. Ironically there were washouts in northern Wisconsin due to heavy rains a year or two ago.

So … do your research. Don’t hesitate to reach out to the MI and Wisc DOTs and their websites and FB pages. Mark from Duluth might be able to provide more information.

I see you’re in the southern part of the Lower Penninsula. If you take your time going north, spend a day or two on Mackinaw Island (please don’t skip that!), see the sights in the eastern part of the the UP … by the time you get to the areas that had the flooding, they should be recovered. More will be know in the next few days. Enjoy the trip. Michigan is very nice. Wisconsin is even better! Don’t miss the Apostle Islands.

Please buy as much fuel in Wisconsin as you can.

Easy drive from Duluth to Fargo. I-35 south to Hwy 210 over to US10 will take you into the Fargo area. All fairly decent with the first part mainly 2 lane.

Plenty of fuel stops and a new Kwik Trip at the junction of I-35 and Hwy 210. Fuel in MN is cheaper than WI due to the tax.

When we go from here to Petoskey, we take US2 to MI28 to MI77 back to US2 and over to St. Ignace and then take I-75 south. It is shorter and a better road than taking US2 all the way.

There are all kinds of places to stop if you want to play tourist on the way. Just be aware that lots of the hole in the wall places are not “big rig friendly”.

We came through the UP this week, knew nothing of this weather event. Beautiful weather all week, we stayed at the Treeland Farm RV resort at Hayward, WI and were extremely impressed. Drove state 70 to 2, great scenery and nice relaxing drive, stayed at Manistique Lakeshore Campground, excellent new RV park! By chance we missed Ashland, I guess ignorance is bliss!
