Urgent generator fan question
Posted by Travis on May 21, 2013 at 12:19 pmwe are trying to head to Oklahoma tomorrow to assist with disaster relief. My power tech 15k generator is overheating and shutting down.
we flushed radiator and replaced thermostat.
Just before it shut down this time we noticed that the big squirrel cage fan was not on. Is there a breaker? Does it have a sensor that tells it when to come on? Should it run constantly? How do I diagnose it?

Travis, my 91 has a designated breaker in ac panel for blower. Gen set would run and shut down. Is was tripped and my tech found it. Thank goodness all my panel is labled.

My fan runs constantly but it’s wired through a ‘watchdog’.
Call Troy @ Liberty in Florida and he’ll get you the answer.

If my memory is correct, I think there was a switch or breaker on the top of the generator on our Liberty for the fan blower motor. I believe it was part of the circuit that turned the blower on when the generator was running.
Check to make sure you didn’t accidentally hit it as it is easy to do.

It sound like a fan breaker problem as stated above, one other thing to check is that you don’t have an air lock from changing the coolant. If the coolant is not flowing to the radiator you will over heat and shut down.
When it does run are you putting out AC current?

Chances are the fan is driven by a belt??? Maybe the belt is broken???

Call Troy as Joel suggested. My understanding is the toggle switch must be in the correct position for the fan to run with or without the Watchdog. The only time the toggle should be changed is if the Watchdog is unhooked and the gen is running on manual, then the switch has to be in the correct position to run the fan. Mine is labeled W/Watchdog and W/Out Watchdog I think, bus is still at Jax.
Jon, did I get that right?

I’m not sure what year the Watchdog was added. I do know when the Watchdog was added to coaches there are data plates that provide coach specific instructions regarding its use.
Generally speaking however, as soon as the generator has started running, the radiator blower fan should kick on because it gets its power from the generator. The fan usually has a circuit breaker on the side of the generator control box. However I have seen Liberty coaches that had the baffle located below the generator radiator either missing or crushed flat. In each case the radiator and blower cannot get proper air flow so either the temps rise and the Watchdog shuts the generator down, requiring a reset, or the blower motor cycles on and off with its internal thermal overload.
So I suggest step one is to verify the blower and associated baffle are functional. Difficult to diagnose over this type of medium, because listening and looking are going to be required before going further.

On our 2000 Featherlite XL45, the genset is curbside Bay 4 in sound box. The radiator is mounted to wall separating Bay 4 and 3
Cool Air intake comes from under coach, passes thru radiator being pulled by (NEWsquirrel cage fan/shroud with 1hp motor blowing it out the floor of bay Intake and out take ate separated by baffles-not the issue
We replaced the fan/motor/shroud with Grainger part where Featherlite buys theirs
Old setup motor had bad bearing hence new, but ran fine
New electric motor like old has an ambient max operating temp of 104F
we attach thermometer to fan motor shroud box to see actual operating temp inside where fan is as hot air from radiator is dragged thru to fan and out bay 3 floor
At 104-5 degrees, electric motor in shroud running squirrel cage fan QUITS!!!!! We replaced fan breaker No joy
Old fan motor shroud squirrel cage assembly ran fine never stopped by heat our old fan motor is 8M228 Dayton Greg at Featherlite looked at a Coach in service its fan motor was Dayton 8M224 Both had “ambient max opersting temps” of 104F
Matter of fact most all Dayton fan motors have ambient temp max of 104F even in their high temp shroud fan squirrel cage applications Now what
Any suggestions. At a loss. Fighting this for three months

I experienced the same type of problem with the fan motor with my Power Tech and the problem was the fan motor starting capacitor. From my experiences and from what you’re saying, that would be what I would be looking at if you find no C/B or switch problems. Should be a simple fix depending, of course, on how easy or difficult it is to access.

John. Grainger fan/shroud/squirrel cage came with new run/start capacitor albeit different than original. Old was 30amp. New is 65
We even removed new capacitor from side of fan shroud to get it out of heat and mounted it outside box cover
i guess next step is carve larger opening in bay 3’s floor and lay radiator down flat and mounted squirrel cage fan shroud on top like other Vantares we are looking at for hints on internet

Is Vantare defeating the “switch” that opens when the temps get to 104?
I cannot imagine this situation to be present on all Vantare coaches and there are a lot of them being used with the generator running when ambient temps are in excess of 104.

Thanks for that info and good idea. I actually created a 12 inch square removable access panel in the back wall of the adjacent baggage bin to make the job easier if I have the problem again. I like the idea of relocating the capacitor better. Again, thanks for the info. I wish that I had thought of it at the time. I put a lot of time onto the access panel.

In our vantare the fan/Radiator is in bay 3 . It shares the space with the OTR fan as you mentioned .

Al
our genset radiator fan shares space in bay3 with our toolbox, former had a “frig” in there, now a tool box
