I have been using a Cradlepoint router with an AT&T SIM card in it now for almost 3 years and been generally happy with its performance for internet and streaming. Let me start by saying that I am no fan of AT&T. I dumped DirecTV after being their customer for over 24 years within a year of that acquisition and when my fees crept up with no notification all while programming plans were reduced. I only used the AT&T SIM because the router was specifically programmed for that carrier and I was able to purchase a no-limit, non-throttling data plan for +/- $80 all in.
Two weeks ago I stopped getting cellular service. From past experience, calling AT&T for any reason is generally an unpleasant event, but they verified that they were sending a signal to that card and that I should first get the card checked at an AT&T store, then check for the latest firmware on my router as they had recently changed their signal format. I did both, and long story, short version, ended up buying the latest version of Cradlepoint’s my router rather than extending the license on my current unit that was nearing its end of life support from the manufacturer. I registered this unit’s identification number with AT&T and was given a new SIM card. I re-assembled the new rig and thought I was off to the races.
Unfortunately, it would not link to AT&T. This prompted multiple calls back to both parties as well as my driving the bus to another location in the event signal strength while sitting the garage might be a problem. I finally tried a 3-way call between CradlepointCradlepoint and AT&T tech support and this is where it got interesting, albeit more frustrating. During this 2 1/2 hour conversation, I learned that AT&T no longer offers an unlimited data plan (although they never notified me of this and were still charging me for their Elite Unlimited plan) and that they would not support Cradlepoint devices on a consumer level, but only on a substantially more expensive business plan. To add insult to injury, I would have to wait until the next business day to discuss their business plan options with their commercial sales department. Cradlepoint even suggested linking through the FirstNet plan for first responders that since they do still support that network but they were unwilling to put me, as a retired fire fighter, on that platform.
Out of desperation and at 6pm on a Saturday, I saw a Verizon store on the way home and stopped in since we have all of our phones with them. I explained what I wanted the SIM card for, and within less than 10 minutes I had a 50 Gbps card in my hands and it was registered to my exact device. Their rate was $25 less than AT&T wanted for 40 Gbps, and the overage charges are much more forgiving. I returned to the garage and was streaming less than 5 minutes later. That said, I urge any AT&T or DirecTV customer to question continuing to give them our business.

I had just the opposite type of issue just happen recently. We had a new Pepwave device, a 5g model, that I just installed. I transferred the SIM from a 5g Verizon Inseego device that worked like crap to it and it worked wonderfully for about 3 days and then I started getting all kinds of text and email messages from Verizon stating that it was not an approved device and couldn’t be used on “their network” and that I needed to call customer service.
I did that and was told that I needed a “special” plan for a 5g data device. I said no, I had a plan for a 5g data device and just updated the device. Went round and round with a drone for almost 10 minutes and got nowhere. I told him that I was not going to pay more for a “special” plan just because I updated my device. I asked to talk to a supervisor, but was told none were available. I told him I was not going to change from my $200 unlimited to anything else and to leave my account alone.
Next day, I get a message thanking me for changing to a “new” plan for my data device. I called immediately and asked for a supervisor, was transferred to one and explained what was going on. She told me that if I wanted to keep the old plan, I MUST USE A VERIZON DEVICE! You can’t expect us to honor a plan that good with just any device she said. What a bunch of crap. I told her to stick it and went to AT&T and switched all our phones, iPad, watches and the Pepwave device over to them and saved about 25% from what we were paying Verizon.
I think they all like to play games with data. I can not understand what difference it makes whether you are using a phone, hot spot, or data only device. Unlimited data is unlimited data no matter which device sucks it down. A gigabyte is still the same no matter which device gets it.
And BTW, there is a prepaid AT&T plan available for 100 gigs for $500 if anyone needs one. I had tested that prior to going over to AT&T with everything.
I have had both Verizon and AT&T for many years. Switched back and forth depending on coverage and price. For now AT&T gives us better coverage and price. Who know what will happen a year from now. All I do know is that it is a pain in the butt when they play these games.

Probably was. I just got back from Newmar for some warranty work. It worked very well while up there. No 5g yet, but solid LTE. I don’t get attitude these carriers have. My device (Pepwave) was tested and accepted by Verizon, so there is no reason it raises any flags, but they just want to make life miserable for those who don’t want to use the junk they sell.
Glad you are up and working too.

Does Starlink work while in motion? The published specs say stationary only which would really tick off my dear wife.

No, Starlink does not work in motion. Service expected to be available in the future………

Actually there are post online for both RV’s & Boats that do use it while moving with a pretty good degree of success, BUT Starlink is very clear that it will void the warranty. The real reason is the FCC has not issued Starlink a license to use the unit while in motion and Starlink is in court battles with Dish and DirecTv over in motion use. (articles note Dish & DirecTv don’t want the competition).

It’s also rumored that Starlink already has a in motion antenna developed and waiting for FCC clearance to start marketing.

The current antenna will not work in motion as it would need to be roof mounted to see the satellites. That should be a pretty easy modification but not something that’s currently available. Some might have put the antenna at a window and had some success but there is not currently an antenna capable of handling the in motion winds without damage.

Starlink can’t handle road wind speed? What happens in a hurricane?
Either way simple solution would be to mount Elon’s dish inside a King Dome cover and paint it to look like R2D2
