  • Trying to make is shine

Posted by Chas on November 3, 2015 at 5:18 pm

So after seeing Buddy’s CC and him still stopping in Nashsville to get is polished, I decided our coach needed a little refresh. I keep it washed and detailed, but waxing it was a once a year since we bought it two years ago activity. The SS was looking a little sad, escpecially compared to what Buddy had at Jeff’s prior to his polishing appointment.

Started last week in my off time. Started slow, still not done 🙁

I am using a Mequiars Finishing Metal Polish as my first pass on the stainless and aluminum (rims I actually use Mothers Mag Polish). Takes time, but cleans and does a good job bringing a shine back. Still doesn’t really deal with scratches, but it’s also a 18 year old coach.

Next step was Mojo Metal polish/sealant that I got at the last official PC non-no-rally at Lazy Days. Stuff is interesting as it has some grit to it, yet stays wet (wettish). Takes a couple passes to get it to really shine. But when it shines, it really shines. Again, this covers just the SS.

The last step was with Mequiars cleaner wax. Adds a nice finish coat to it. I used this from top to bottom. Really cleans the paint (and anything left on the SS).

Here is what i am using (still have more to go).

    Hey Charles,

Did you have any discoloration on your stainless? Mine is slick as a gut but if you look really close you can see brownish spots. I can not feel them at all and if your standing up looking down you can not see them. I used Meguires detail wax but it did not cut it at all. I was afraid to use something with grit because I was afraid i would scratch it and make it worse. Did you use a buffer or did you rub it by hand..

    Steve,

I had a couple stains here and there. Nothing major. The stuff I use cut it and cleaned it up. Didn’t add any more swirl marks. All done by hand.
basically you need two of everything to handle a 45′ coach. Need to get more of everything to finish the drivers side.

I don’t think our coach has ever been “professionally” polished so there are swirls, scratches, etc. This cleaned those making them less noticeable, but they are still there. I think a professional polish would get the swirls out. The scratches, probably not.

as for the slickness? Slicker then then a stripper smothered in baby oil. Not that I know what that’s like, but I read about it on the internet 😉

Steve I talked with the guy that did my coach in Nashville and he said that the stains you have are from a chemical used for deicing roads and it is a reaction to the stainless.

He said he gets it off all the time. I gues from polishing with rouge and a buffing wheel.

    Almost Chrome

    Buddy,

I talked to him on Prevost Community’s Facebook page, and seems to be a very nice fella. He quoted me a price to do mine. What did you think about yours after it was done? I thought it looked great before..

    Charles,

Could you send me that link to the slick stripper page? Want to do some research myself.

Steve he did a super job.

My stainless looked good looking straight on at it but at an angle in the sun light it was not pretty. Lots of swirll marks.

Now it really looks good and shines even better than before.
