  • Trusted Tire Pressure Gauge

Posted by Archived on July 2, 2013 at 9:09 am

With the importance of tire pressure, what tire pressure gauge do you trust? I have 2 pencil type old school gauges and don’t really trust either, although they are generally reliable. I have one of the cheap digital pencil styles and it seems accurate when it works, it just doesn’t work most of the time. My son-in-law, that owns his own commercial garage, has 2 Matco round digital ones and they seem great, as they should be as they are expensive. I’m looking to buy a another gauge and am leaning toward the Matco one.

I have more guages than I have fingers and the discrepancy between them is substantial. I took them all with me to a tire dealer and asked him to compare them to his master gauge. He proclaimed they were all accurate which I knew to be BS.

So I defer to a digital gauge I have been using that agrees with most of them and I add 5 PSI. Better to be over inflated than under.

For guys with TPSS how do the reported pressures compare with what a gauge shows?

I have found that the pressure pro sensors are within 2 lbs. of my gauge that I trust,I don’t know which one is right.

Jack, How did you fit the sensors on your tag and steer wheels. Truk looked at mine and did not see how to fit the sensors without changing the valve stems to a longer one which would leave the sensor hanging out. Sorry to change topic.

Check out Griot’s Garage round Digital Tire inflator. I have one and really like it.

    Jon,

My sensors almost fit inside a short piece of PVC. After a little file work on the PVC it is a custom tool.

The problem is on the wheels for the 365 tires the valve stem has a dedicated hole through which it protrudes. It doesn’t extend out very far, and worse, the hole is quite small and it doesn’t look like the pressure caps will even fit.

I have the same problem with my 365’s, the stem hole like Jon’s isn’t big enough and would require a very short extension, which I hate to do.

when I put them my 2002 Royal coach, the guys at Royal Pheonix had a tire company come in and turn the valve stem so they would fit. It worked out well. I only use it now for my tow vehicle as the new coach has the Prevo system in it.
