  • Traveling in the single digits

Posted by jackie on January 7, 2024 at 8:47 pm

Have always driven in warm weather, but will be traveling this week in some single digits for about 3 days, we have the Aquahot system and tole kick heaters in water bays…..any advice on what else to do to prevent freezing or busted water lines?

    Thanks!

No experience, yet would ensure before departure the heating device(s) in your water plumbing bay is operational.

Yours may or may not have a separate thermostat inside the bay. If so, would set it very high to ensure the distant corners away from the heater also get as much heat as possible.

Have always said if we were to travel as you describe, would add an additional small, 120vac ceramic heater in the side opposite of my plumbing bay Webasto heater fan.

GOOD LUCK and hope all stays warm!

Please report back and let us know how it goes!

Was recently in Branson, MO in 20 deg weather. Didn’t do anything special. When driving the engine water circulates through the AquaHot and that keeps the water bay warm. When stopped I keep the AquaHot on keeping the water bay warm.
you will find the AquaHot warms any gray, black or fresh water in the tanks helping keep the bay warm.
Remember, Prevost is a Canadian company, they build them for the cold.

Anyone use a fuel additive to reduce fuel jelling in these low temperatures?

We traveled several times when the temps were in the minus 20’s.

Here are some tips. Verify your water and sewer bay(s) are heated. We had an electric heater installed by Liberty as well as a vent from the house heat source entering the bay to prevent freezing.

Water lines in the bus to the fixtures were in chases along the floor, away from outside walls so as long as the interior was warm they were freeze protected. Make sure that piping is away from the outer skin.

Once you have verified the above you are good to go. Enjoy the ride.

Driving in very cold weather however is a challenge. At highway speeds the air moving across the windshield and side windows sucks the heat right through the glass and the frigid glass spills cold air into the bus. The windshield is the worst offender so even with every heat source including the bus chassis heat and the house heat sources your legs are going to get cold. Stop the bus moving and it tends to warm quickly. 20 above isn’t even an issue.

    Larry,

I use PS winter supplement when I am not running from pump to pump or if I am staying in one location for a few days. I also carry their 911 just in case (luckily never had to use it)

Have used Diesel Kleen since 2009. Had a new SOB and after 2 years of use (running Diesel Kleen) disassembled the Aqua Hot, it was spotless clean in the burner with just a slight sheen of a yellowish brown.

Have never had an issue with algae in the tank either.

Notice the garbage cans at the truck fuel lanes. They usually have quite a few empty containers of Diesel Kleen in them. The truckers use a lot of it.

I’m a full time caretaker and don’t have a lot of time to spend on my computer anymore. I try to read every day, but reply where I think I can add something, but there are smart guys on here answering questions so I usually stay quiet now.

Thanks for all of the help! We had to stop in Oklahoma City on Saturday night with minus 3 and wind chill of minus 17. Followed the advice of you good people, turned on toe heaters in bays, turned on floor heat and ran Aquahot….no problems!! Used Aquahot pre heat to warm up engine for an hour and a half and we were ready to roll! However, I wouldn’t want to do that every year!
in Quartzite at 62 degrees today and headed to Fl in a week!
