  • Transmission output shaft leak

Posted by AL on November 12, 2014 at 4:20 pm

I’am seeing some oil on the garage floor. Turns out leak is from a defective transmission output shaft seal.

Leaking trans fluid has washed the lower surface of transmission housing.

New seal installed in transmission, cleanup area. Note new u-joint saddle clamps and bolts. These are always replaced with any drive shaft service as eliminating u-joint coupling failure, bolts torqued to spec.

    Al,

Did you have to drain the transmission fluid to change the seal? Or is the level below the seal?

My output shaft is oozing a bit when driving but no dripping when parked. But changing the seal is probably in my future too

Had my trans seal fee placed at Prevost JAX in Sept. The old seal had worn a groove in the shaft (only 54000 miles but 15 years). Prevost has a sleeve that fits over the shaft so the groove does not destroy the new seal. Also replaced the U-joint as the old one was VERY rough. Less than 1qt of trans fluid added. Invoice $740
