  • Transmission filter HD4000MH R

I am gathering parts to change trans fluid in my coach. Found can get fluid Delvac synthetic atf at NAPA under $40/gal on their crazy Saturday sales at which price is 30% discount. . Trying to identify filter part numbers. Transtar catalog shows a 4″ and a 6″ filter. Which do our units have? Also have seen mention of 2″ and 4″ sumps – which do we have? Could probably figure this out once I get under the coach but have not been there yet.

It’s based on the sump size David, I had an 01 Liberty, but don’t remember which one, maybe Jeff will jump in here or Peter..

All the Prevos I have done have the 2″ sump.

The Allison 4000s in my Monacos had 4″ sumps and use Allison pt# 29548988. They measure 6″ long.

The Allison B500 in my Prevost has a 2″ sump and use Allison pt# 29548987. They measure 4″ long.

Turns out my coach has the 2″ sump based on inspection – the actual external measure of bottom of pan to bottom of trans case is closer to 1 1/2 inches. Pan is easily visible looking in from either side of the coach. The nominal 4″ sump is actually about 3 1/2 inches from what I found in research. So, my unit takes the 4″ filter. The 6″ filter is for those units with a 4″ sump.

Also found no definitive statement of such but from parts lists and illustrations I encountered in researching this it looks like the determining factor of the deeper 4″ sump is if the Allison unit is equipped with a PTO. Doubt if many coaches have that, unless someone switched out a unit as a replacement at some time in the vehicles life. Or perhaps the OE or converter customer specifies the deeper sump when specing out the drivetrain. Contrary to what I would presume due to the extra fluid capacity of the deeper sump, the prescence or absence of a retarder did not appear to affect the sump depth used.

Remember when you change the filters that it is critical you observe the torque values for the filter bolts.
