Tom mentioned it in another thread: After a year my filter gasket started leaking–just thought I would mention it as I was prepared for a major job trying to find and fix a leak. Bob

NOTE: CAUTION: Do not remove the attaching bolts for the filter cover with power driven tools.

Allison recommends hand tools only to minimise the likleyhood of stripping the threads in the aluminum case, thus causing an expensive thread repair.

and only remove them from a cold transmission. Don’t ask me how I know.

Not knowing the history of the coach and where it spent its life I can only throw this out based on one of my coaches. The filler tube (the tube the dipstick runs in) had corrosion at the bottom where it went into the transmission. Not a particularly easy fix unless you can get beneath the coach as well as work from the top.

The critical part of the replacement is to get all the crud from the flat area where the steel tube enters the aluminum case. If it is not clean there is a risk of getting grit into the transmission.

The 89 had a external spin on filter for the trans that started leaking after a year. I thought it was internal also until I did my search. 89 XL 5sp Allison. Not the B 500 in later coaches for I don’t know if their filters are internal or not. Also had a o-ring start leaking on power steering pump on 8-V92 that I thought was trans fluid. Not a hard fix but hard to get to. If it lets go you have no power steering. I’m running a Eaton 10sp autoshift in 98 so still have no experience with newer Allison. Bob
