Do you guys lift your trailing axle in tight

turn arounds to reduce trailing axle tire

    and hub wear?
A mechanic mentioned that to me today.

No, unless the turn is so tight I need every centimeter, and that might happen once every ten years.

Sure do in tight slow turns to keep from wearing edges on those tag 365’s. Had prior experience with tire edges having chunks of tread come off. Since I’ve adjusted tag axle height chain to raise some higher to take more weight off tag tire. It doesn’t come completely off the ground. Michelin gave a $ adjustment. Another reason not to have 365’s on tag and steer.

I always lift for any turn that is remotely taxing on the tags. I also have changed my policy on tag axle tire pressures. I used to run relatively low tag tire pressures (90 psi) working off the Michelin tire pressure charts and axle loads. I have gone back to 105 psi on the tags to match my steer axle. Some people do that so they can swap tags to steers if they need to. My stance is……If I need to do that swap, I’m not doing that work and will have whoever is check the pressures. Worst case, I have an air hose and air doubler onboard and can make whatever pressure change I need to…….

That’s what the mechanic says. He said lifting

the tag axle will let it slide rather than drag

with the pressure on the tag axle. I mean I

don’t often get in tight spaces but at some truck stops

I have a couple times. Thanks for the information!

I do a 3-point turn in my driveway when returning home. Raising the tag helps cut down on tire marks, and allows me to back closer to the edge of the driveway without damaging the grass.

    I might start.

Apparently the tag axles lift mechanism on our coach wasn’t lubed at some point in its life (was taken to a Freightliner shop often), it bound up, won’t turn, and bent the rod on the brake chamber that lifts the chain and only one side goes up.

You guys that do lift, how long before the coach gets back to full ride height in back after you lift the tag, the coach settles on the drive axle bags, they fill up, etc.? The one time I tried to lift the tag (when I didn’t know much) the coach squatted down, I drove out of the driveway, turned and the driveshaft loop hit the crown of the road. I suspect should of waited for the rear to come to ride height.

My Tag goes back to normal in less than minute.

No. I’m on my 5th tag axle coach and I never raise the tag. I do a sharp 90* turn turn, forwards and backwards, in and out of our driveway every time we come and go. Never had a problem with anything.
