Trailer tires
Bernie how many miles on the old. G614’s tires???? The G614 replaced the old G159’s . The G159 where made at the start for Greyhound bus trailers they had lots of tread depth but the tire would wear out the out side edges first and have lots of tread in the center , people where un happy so Goodyear replaced it with the G614 not as much tread depth but the tire would wear evenly across the hole tire . I had 4 sets of the G614’s had nothing but problems blow outs , flat tires . The G159 where good tires could get 50,000 miles out of them . I then changed rims from 16’s to 17.5 ‘s put Michelin XTA 2 Energy’s on 235 / 17.5 end of problems there where only rated for 62 mph but I could get 80,000 miles out of them and had 6 sets of those , they are the best tires hands down I drove 65 mph never had one problem. The problem is there are not many 16 inch trailer tires out there that are LR G and up , Les Schwab has a good trailer tire in 16 inch Geostar G 574 it is a Tiawanese tire it is rated at 3750lbs @ 110 psi G rated commercial tire for towing I have used them and can get 70,000 miles out of them . Not made in the USA , but not many choices for 16 inch trailer tires …… Just my two cents worth

I responded on the other thread before I saw this.
72,000 on the Goodyears. I did get edge wear on the low side of the road but only one blowout. It’s close to what you were getting on the 17.5. I didn’t want to go bigger on the rims but it was a good move for you. What kind of air pressure did you run? I’m anal about tires and always run maximum cold inflation, 110lbs. I don’t know about the Geostar but it’s rated the same as the G614. I wish Michelin would get a 16 rated the same.

I am also anal about pressure a ran 110 cold I had no luck with the G614’s put about 40,000 miles a year on the trailer tires, the Geostars where the best of the 16 inch tires I could get 70,000 out of them I change tires every two years on trailer could have got 100,000 out of them they had lots of tread left , but I don’t take chances on tires. The G614 wear pretty even just did not have good luck with them tried 4sets , I thought it was me but after that many it was not put Michelin on not one problem no blow outs no flat tires they where the best ran them at 125 cold trailer 4 tires trailer axles weight 19,800 total they where rated for 6005 lbs single at 125psi could get 100,000 out of them.and the trailer was air ride.On the trailer I have now I run Geostars at 40,000 miles on them they have over half tread depth left I think I might get 80,000 out of them but does not matter they will be replaced end of this year

Pressure Pro is good. I run the Smart system on the bus, nothing on the trl. The trl doesn’t concern me as much because I’m not pushing that much weight on it. If I have an issue the remaining 5 tires will hold it up without a lean and I don’t get out of the bus without a tire bat to give them a thump. Your an old trucker like me and I’ll bet we could guess to within 10 lbs of air from one thump of the tire.
When the Smart system takes a crap I will do the trailer too and we’ll talk.

I have pressure pro on bus and trailer from Tom it’s the best … Would not leave home with out it 1500 miles a week for 38 weeks it well worth it!!!!!!

I’ll have to look into the Geostars next time, I’m sure the price point is alot better then the Goodyears. I hope Michelin will step up next time I need tires. It’s good you found a solution.

I also had constant problems with the 16″ Goodyears. Every trip involved a blowout. I kept the tires at just under maximum cold air pressure. My Featherheavy stacker is stored inside and used once or twice per year. I bought all new tires and popped two on the way home. I was ready to sell the stacker in frustration. Then Mark Brown with Brown Motorsports (trailer manufacture in Phoenix) suggested that I could change the rims to 17.5″ and install higher rated low profile tires. I bit the bullet and did this. Problem solved!!! No more blowouts since I did this. Highly recommend this change.

You can get rims for flat nuts or the coned ones what ever hubs the trailer has you can get rims for!! That’s not the right term to use but brain not working good right now , but you get my point maybe someone can jump in here and give the right terms sorry!!

Hard to find a reasonable answer to why you guys had so many issues. We seem to run in the worst conditions also, constant high heat. When I had my blowout it was 70 degrees, 250 miles from home in AZ. No good reason why, checked them 30 minutes earlier in Gila Bend. Don’t want to jinx myself but never an issue, for a Goodyear tire they are ok.
The main thing is you guys found a solution.

Bernie it may have been bad batch of tires it was the years 2002 to 2004 . They may have fixed problem was not trying to stir you up sorry!!!!!
