We bought a 2011 Jeep Wranger 4X4 Rubicon and installed the Blue Ox Aventa LX.
We just have a question…after our first tow with it to Gulf Shores, AL, we have a terrible rubber/oil smell. A person at the RV Resort told us it is normal??? But we still have the smell, mostly in reverse. We followed the owners manual as to how to tow 4 down. So we are wondering where the smell is coming from?
Any suggestions?
PS. Turns out, you will get pulled over if the Coach is registered in one spouses name and the toad in the other! Goodness, my husband was given the third degree as to whether or not he owned either. Maybe he was being profiled because he is a big scary bald, tatooed guy with a goatee? LOL. That translates to “Big Teddy Bear!”

When we unhook and are driving around, the smell is stronger if we are backing out of a parking space or drive.

Have you checked for heat ( the old feel method) on all that turns underneath or use temp gun? That sounds like somethings hot.

NORMAL that is rubber burning off from under your jeep

Normal they all do it. It’s rubber scuffed off the tires that end up on the exhaust manifold. Sometimes it takes longer than other times for it to burn off.

After pulling your toad a couple hundred miles
are you talking about the diesel soot smell trapped in radiator cooling fins then heated due to normal engine temperature
sucked into fresh air intake while traveling ?
Let me explain this under the microscope a little…it will all make sense then….
The above scenarios happen often with the Liberty installed giant 186.3 pound mud flap attached to undercarriage at rear of bus.
This actually slows down the forward motion on Liberty causing drivers to press full throtttle to get going over 58.5 mph .
Marathon on the other hand has better air foil and needs no wind deflector to change the aero dynamic lines thus
increasing mileage and ease of engine power and rarely needs any fuel during the year.

If I buy a Liberty,
1) Chip it somehow to get 600hp
2) Install a 2nd mudflap to catch the crap thrown up by the first one 😉
Seriously, regarding rubber from tires, is it a compound thing? Perhaps some tires are more prone to shedding rubber than others. i.e. a harder compound = less rubber scrubbed off. The. Pirelli tires used in Formula One are an extreme example of tire ‘graining’ which I think is the effect you are seeing (to a lesser extent) on Toads.

The highways are covered with dust or particles worn from tires. When we drive and wear our tires out that rubber that has been abraded from the tires ends up on the ground. It also ends up airborne around our highways. Look at the spray kicked up by vehicles driving on a wet highway. The same thing is happening to the fine dust and rubber particles and they seem to settle on all surfaces of our toads. That includes the exhaust system.
Those of us who have been towing learned that after we have towed for a while the first time we start the toad and get the exhaust system hot we are going to get the odor of burning rubber. The first time any of us experienced that odor we got concerned, and as soon as we found what it was it just became something to be expected.
No big deal. And there is no amount of protection short of an enclosed trailer that will stop that from happening.

It seems that some toads smell more than others after pulling. My old 95 cheap jeep smelled of rubber as does my current toad the 2006 Scion xB. The 2000 Denali we pulled for a while did not seem to smell at all. It may be that the exhaust is more exposed to picking up tire particles that others.

I am not sure that the smell is all rubber,when my partiner has towed his HHR behind his class C with a V10 gasoline engine he does not get any smell when he drives the car.I noticed that my 2001 coach had greater smell after a trip than my 2005 had,I assumed that it could be a result of a non EGR engine verses a stricter emission engine with EGR,my 08 had even less smell after towing than the other 2 coaches when it was new.I think that if it was rubber it would be present all the time.
