  • Trace inverters operation

    New to this so please give me laymen response

    Went to coach in the last 4 visits and get conflicting info on remote monitor on one inverter.

    Once the led on right inverter was at the point saying over temp

    Then it moved to another position on the led vertical lighting.

    Today it was different as one inverter indicated it was in float and the other inverter was in bulk charge.

    Went back to coach about 4 hours later and both inverters were in float with 13.5 voltage.Coach has been plugged into 50 amp service for three days.

    How do you know if the led is representing a fault of low amperage?

    What is the battery sensor for the inverter, and where is it located?

    Hoe do you tell if it is a sensor or battery problem?

    Unplug temp sensor and leave it unplugged to start with.

    All the converters wire their conversions differently, so what I am about to say may not apply to your coach. The battery temp sensor (I have 2) are a small plastic box that is on top of one battery in each section held in place by double sided tape. The wire connection looks like an old land line phone wire. just disconnect the wires from both plastic boxes. I have two banks of batteries. One bank of 4 is wired to give 12VDC and the other bank of 4 is wired to give 24VDC. Each bank has a temp sensor. As far as one inverter going to float at a different time than the other, on my Trace Inverters this is a normal function, since it appears each one is reading one bank, so one bank can go to float before the other bank. Just one word of caution. If you are going to disconnect the batteries for some reason such as load testing your batteries, shut down the inverters. Otherwise the inverters will see no voltage from the batteries, since you disconnected them, and will start trying to charge the batteries at the maximum rate. This will cook the charging board in the inverter and you are going to be handing someone several pictures of Benjamin Franklin. Ask me how I know.

    No matter the device, if it is electrical my first reaction to anything I see on a display, warning light or gauge is to go to the source with my Fluke and verify the reading.

    As to inverters, as Fred points out every converter tends to set up the house electrical system differently. But as you study your coach and learn how yours was set up, you also need to access the owner’s manual for your inverters (or any other devices you need to understand) and learn how they work, why they do what they do, and what the various displays or lights are telling you.

    You can ask us all questions here, but the specifics for your devices and coach are going to be the most accurate if you learn their owner’s manual.
