  • Trace inverter question

Posted by Jim on November 25, 2017 at 7:18 pm

    Good evening,

I have one of two inverters (Trace SW series) that is cycling back and forth from inverting and shore power.

I have turned the inverter off and on to try and clear any faults. Because no faults show on the trouble shooting screen. I also disconnected the remote from for that inverter and it still switches back and forth from shore to inverting.

Does this sound like the inverter going bad or the transfer switch contacts going bad?

    Thanks for any help…

It could be the inverter, I will let some one else answer that, but have you eliminated shore power as the cause? Is that leg of shore power cutting out? Could be a loose connection in a cord or plug or even breaker.

    Jim,

My only inverter issue ever was the result of a bad ground. All sorts of issues were presented including inverter over voltage on the charging circuit, but the bottom line was all of the weird indications came down to a ground connection with white corrosion between the terminals and chassis ground.

I spent a large amount of time following every cable and inspecting all connections and terminals. I also verified before I began the tracing process that the interior of the inverter was clean and free of all the dust and lint that collects over time and that the cooling fan(s) were working.

    Jim,

I had a similar problem and it turned out that the inverter had been set to search rather than on. Once I set it back to on the cycling stopped. My bus is a 2007 Marathon. Don’t know if this will help but that’s what my issue was.

You might try to re-boot, Turning it off may not do it so you need to disconnect battery power and un plug (AC & DC) , give it a min then turn it back on and try it.

After working on finding the solution, I found it to be the power pedestal must have a bad ground. This kind of thing can’t happen at Disney World. Not. We moved to another site and have not had any problem since.

Thank you you everyone for your input. I glad I could reply with the final solution.

    Thanks again.

I don’t know about other electronic devices but I learned ground problems to be near the top of the list when problems crop up on our coaches.

One of the reasons I carry a surge protector that will tell me if something is wrong with shore power.

I have the “Progressive Industries 50 Amp Portable RV Smart Surge Protector With Cover.”

The lights are “idiot proof,” and I love the cover, especially useful in the rain.

Also, my original one had a circuit go bad after it protected my coach from a bad ground.

Progressive replaced it for free! What a deal …

I have a Surge Guard 44270 that I picked up at CW many years ago. It does the job, and has a higher surge protection rating than the more expensive model.
