  • TRACE INVERTER ISSUES

Posted by Archived on May 24, 2023 at 10:19 am

Hi All. I have two Trace inverters in my coach, and the remote for Inverter #1 is inoperable. I cannot scroll through the menu items, nor can I select any options available on any particular screen. Currently, the generator controls appear on the display. Pushing the “reset/factory settings” button occasionally changes the menu item, but does not restore the ability to cycle through topics or make selections.

The inverter display/control malfunctions have produced some crazy events with the autostart generator, inverting, power source selection (shore vs. generator),etc. After pressing the “reset/factory settings” button several times, I finally got the inverter to select “AC 1” and go to bulk charge.

I want to use the inverter disconnects in an effort to reset the inverters, but I cannot turn off Inverter #1 due to the remote being inoperable. I have not yet looked for a breaker for Inverter #1. I know there is a breaker for Inverter #2. Is there a risk of damage to the inverter if I activate the disconnect without turning off the inverter? Any other ideas besides the disconnect feature?

On my 2008 Legendary with two Trace Sw4024 inverters, I had only one occasion where the display for an inverter froze. I unplugged it and waited a couple of minutes and plugged it back in and it started working and never did it again. Maybe give that a try??

    Colt,

You have 2 shutoff dials for the inverters outside of the box their in in one of the bays.

Also you could take both remote panels out of the wall and disconnect the rear plug and put it in the other remote panel to set it.

Your going on a wacky ride hitting reset buttons and other things. If you know how to set the inverters fine but if not call Marathon and they have specific programming they will walk you thru and no need to touch them again. Also if I remember you can adjust the inverters on the inverter itself but you will need to take the top off the box their in.

Your inverter should have a panel display on top of the unit (mine does) to use in case of remote failure. Might have to have a mirror to see it.

Thank you for the tips and advice. I spent more time investigating last night, and I have further information.

The remote display on Inverter #1 is “stuck” on the “set generator” screen. None of the buttons on the remote are functioning, so I cannot change the menu item from “set generator,” and I cannot scroll thru the specific commands (i.e., “off,” “auto,” “on,” etc.) If I press the “default to factory settings” button, the cursor moves one position. Using this method, I moved the “set generator” choice to “auto.”

I confirmed that the display on the top of Inverter #1 is identical to the remote display (both say “set generator”), and the buttons on the top of the Inverter are non-functioning. I assume that this indicates that the remote is not the problem.

The generator frequently started, ran less than one minute, and then shut down.I temporarily solved this problem by switching 12V disconnect for the generator.

I went through the procedure for putting the bus “to sleep,” which included switching the disconnects for the inverters. I waited about 20 minutes, and then “woke up” the bus. Both inverters displayed the “Inverter” screen, and the buttons on Inverter #1 were functioning. So, I selected “on” for the inverter.

I was just about to declare “victory,” but then the display on Inverter #1 returned to the “set generator” screen and the buttons were once again non- functional.

Both inverters switched to “bulk” charge after they were re-powered, and both eventually switched to “float” charge. I left the 12v generator disconnect disconnected, so I am not sure if the generator is going to continue to start and shut off.

So, disconnecting and re-connecting the power to the inverters corrected the problem, but only for a short time. If I could ever get the buttons on Inverter #1 to work properly, I know how to set the parameters on the Inverter (Thanks, Tom!).

This Inverter #1 problem arose following a thunderstorm. The bus was plugged into a Progressive Industries EMS, but it did not indicate any faults occurred.

    Any ideas????

If you unplug it behind the remote panel for the inverter and set parameters on the inverter itself that will tell you.

If the inverter doesn’t work then something is amiss in the inverter.

Also if 1 inverter is set to auto gen it will keep trying to start.

Another update. I was at Clearwater Motorcoach yesterday, and they agreed to try to diagnose the problem. I had already disconnected and bypassed Inverter #1, and my generator was being abused by the “auto start” feature. I had determined that the cursor for selecting a specific function on the “set generator” screen was scrolling from “off,” “auto,” “on,” and “eq,” which cause th generator to start, run for a period of time (usually less than 5 minutes) and then shut down.

The techs at Clearwater Motorcoach unplugged the remote and used a spare remote to try to control the Inverter. No luck, as the Inverter remained “stuck” on the “set generator” screen, and the buttons on the remote was inoperable.

The techs determined that the problem was within the Inverter itself, and that repair or replacement is necessary. I can feel my wallet getting lighter.

BTW, I had a very good experience at Clearwater Motorcoaches. I met the current owner of the business, and many of the employees were the same people that worked for Parliament, Coachworx, USA Luxury Coach, etc. The staff, at the direction of the owner, immediately started work on the inverter issue even though I was not there for service.
