Tool to replace Bay door gas shocks
I’m sure some of you have had problems removing old gas shocks that hold bay doors up. This can be difficult, especially on H’s.
It is hard to get to the inside pivot point to release the clip holding the end on the ball.
Below, is a tool I made out of an awning rod. Bent the end in a vice, and took a grinder, to sharpen a point on it.
Works great to pry the clip loose way up inside the bay, when you can’t get your hand in there.

removing the old shock is half the problem. Needing to compress the new shock even one half of an inch is very difficult. Some bay doors cannot be over-opened enough to bring the connecting balls to a distance to allow easy attachment. Anyone have suggestions? My solution to this point has been self fab hook and ratchet strap to get the compression needed to connect new strut.

The way I do it is……….raise the door all the way up, have someone hold it, or prop it up, then loosen the stop that holds the door open, which also is where the ball for the shock is. Once it’s loose, you can slip the shock end on it, and then, tighten it back up.
I have had a couple that still wouldn’t go after doing that. So then, I took the stop out, drilled the hole, so the ball mount would have more play, and then it would go on.
I’ll take pictures of what I’m talking about if it’s not clear to you. Or, if you are going to be in Tampa, I’ll show you.
