  • Toll Roads – EZ-Pass & I-Pass

Posted by Archived on December 25, 2013 at 7:45 am

Had a question thrown at me that I know nothing about.

It appears EZ-pass and I-Pass can be used in multiple states and will work with both programs. When you look at the applications, there is private accounts under 7,000 lbs and then business accounts. Seems motorhomes are in the private section (if they’re under 7,000 lbs) and also business sections if over 7,000 lbs.

So for a bus, it appears you would have to do a business account, even though it’s not a business vehicle.

    Anyone familair with this?

    Private Accounts

A private account may have up to 4 transponders per account.

    Requirements:

    • Vehicles are privately owned or leased and have two axles
    • A maximum gross vehicle weight of 7,000 pounds
    • Single rear tires
    • For cars, vans, pickup trucks, motorcycles and RVs

    Business Account

A business account may have unlimited transponders per account.

    Requirements:

    • Vehicles are business owned or leased vehicles with two or more axles
    • Single or multiple rear tires
    • For tractor trailers, auto transporters, pickup and other trucks, buses, vans, cars, motorcycles, and RVs

    Tom,

I have a business account for the bus in NJ (ezpass). Your explanation is exactly what was told to me by the EZpass people. It works in every state where it is accepted. I also have a Sunpass for FL.

    Tom,

I have had a personal NY-EZPass for many years with 3-PUs, 4-cars and our 2 RVs. Each vehicle is listed separately and is categorized by weight. They issue a separate acct number for each grouping of 4 vehicles. The transponders have been used in any state that is part of the EZPASS network without any problems. I do use automatic replishment.

Unless they have changed the rules this year, you do not have to be a resident of NY to sign up for a NY EZPASS

    Gill,

Like you I do not have a business account in FL for SunPass and I also use it in the bus and the Toad.

I used a personal, not business, Florida SunPass account with a single transponder for both the bus and toad. Never a problem with tolls when switched between the vehicles.

There has been a lot of talk about the Florida SunPass transponder being accepted on the EZPass system in the near future, but I don’t know how long that will actually turn out to be. Florida is now in the process of changing out all the old transponders for new ones. One difference is no more batteries to go bad.

Just blow through the toll plazas …….eventually they’ll find ya!

My understanding is Sun Pass will not work with I-Pass or EZ-Pass, so states other than FL is the question.

I stay off the toll roads whenever possible, and just pay at the cash box when I have to use one. It isn’t worth the hassle to me of getting one of the transponders. I refuse to pay those crooks if I can avoid it.

    Tom,

You are correct in that the Florida SunPass will not work on the EZPass system….yet.

When we lived in NJ, I had a regular EZPass transponder on my motorhome. There was nothing “business” or “commercial” about it. As I recall, I simply registered the transponder as being on an RV. Never had a problem.

Of course, that was many years ago……

In Maine I was told I needed one E-Z pass for a 2 axle personal vehicle, and one “business” class for my 3 axle coach. I have found it has worked in all the states we have traveled in with EZ pass or I pass.

Did NOT work for sun pass ( got a bill in the mail and a fine)

I have an IPass and I use the same transponder for both the MH and the toad. My understanding is it is good on all toll roads east of the Mississippi except Florida. The automatic replenishment function works great. It makes a huge difference especially when there is open tolling and you never have to stop.

When I obtained the NH transponder, they registered it for the bus and told me not to use it in the car.

So it is semi permanently mounted on the windshield and, so far, so good. Have had it for close to 2 years and it seems to work just fine because I have not received any notices of any kind.

The Sunpass iks registered for the bus as well and no issues with that one, either.

All I must remember is to wrap the toad’s transponder in tin foil to avoid being charged extra when towing.

I wish all of you a belated Merry Christmas and an early Happy New Year!

    Cheers,

    Ronald
