  • Toilet Trouble

Posted by Eric on October 10, 2016 at 7:36 pm

    Greetings
PC friends. While my family enjoyed a
wonderful time at Two Rivers Landing, I noticed an issue with our toilet. Not sure of the model, so I included a
    picture for identification. Normally the
bowl water level is about 5 inches, but now it fills to almost the top of the
bowl. It still flushes perfectly, but I
am concerned that one day it will overflow.
While disconnecting from shore utilities, and no water was being used in
the coach, the water pump cycled on about every 3 minutes for about 10 seconds.
I think this is related to my toilet
    trouble.

    Constructive
    thoughts and ideas are welcome.

I think the short cycling of the pump may be associated with a number of things and I am not convinced it is the toilet unless you know water is running into the toilet. Big topic with a lot of factors to consider.

As to the toilet that problem of overfilling can possibly be related to the timer on the switch or the adjustment of the water flow that is controlled by a valve at the rear of the toilet.

Jeff, what makes the toilet you suggest better than the Headhunter?

    Eric,

Call Heathunter and they’ll help you diagnose your problem, they’re very helpful.

    I
took Jon and Tom’s advice and called Headhunter.
Talked with Wilson Bryan – very nice and knowledgeable. He identified my toilet as a Headhunter
    Superbowl.
    He diagnosed my problem as
being a fouled or defective flush valve.

A new one will be about $150.
Will need to determine if I need 12v or 24v, if I go that route. I first would like to find this valve and try
cleaning it – I understand getting to the valve will be a chore.
I am keeping Jeff’s advice in my thoughts – I
know the perfect dumpster, located in Vonore, TN.

The flush valve is located in reasonable proximity to the toilet. Depending on your floor plan it could be located at the top of a bay secured to the underside of the floor, or it could be located above the floor under or behind a cabinet.

The device is relatively simple and once you can see it and have room to work on it it can remain where it is. All you are going to need to do is remove the six screws holding the top to the base. (Going by memory). The diaphragm is a round black rubber piece captured between the two halves of the flush valve body. It can be removed and cleaned. The key is making sure the pin hole is clean and has no obstructions.

Once you are sure the diaphragm and body are clean, put it back together and try it. If you have relatively easy access it should take 15 minutes or so to do it. Note that there is a small solenoid that is activated when you push the button on the toilet. That hits and opens the diaphragm initiating the flush cycle so it has to be in the proper position when the valve is reassembled.

FWIW, my flush valve is mounted on the floor of the coach behind my toilet which faces the coach rear. It is accessed by removing a kick plate in the galley. Obviously, if your floor plan is different, yours may be located in a different place. My toilet has been very reliable. OOPS, probably shouldn’t have said that!

I will give another Thumbs-Up to Wilson Bryan at HeadHunter (954-581-6996 ). He stepped me through the troubleshooting to find a valve with a bad diaphram. He also explained the valves – starting in mid-2000 – have a cone strainer installed on the inlet to help keep debris out that would clog the pinhole mentioned above.
