  • Toad Brakes

    Just changed the brake pads on my toad (2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee – Diesel). 86,000 miles driven (mostly highway) and an additional 65,000 towed. Front pads had about 30 percent left on them, rear pads had about 15 -20 percent left on them.

    I have always seen the front wear about twice as fast as the rears. Trying to make since of why the rears were worn more then the fronts. Making an assumption that because the actual driving was done mostly at highway speeds so not a lot of braking, and the braking while towing (using Air Force One since jeep was new) did not have a lot of weight transfer forward or frontend diving like normal braking. Perhaps that caused more wear in the rear pads.

    Nothing serious, just an item of curiosity. Any thoughts or theories?

    Hi Chuck, I have been doing my own brakes since i was 16 and as far back as I can remember, my vehicles always wear more on the front than the rear.

    I’m on another forum for 07-14 Yukons, Tahoes, and Escalades. The rear brakes wearout much faster than the fronts on these too.

    Fronts wearout faster has always been the norm for me too. Maybe automakers are putting larger brakes on the front ? or smaller on the rear?

    In most vehicles as well as motorcycles up to 80% of all stopping force is on the front wheels, due to weight, weight transfer upon deceleration, etc. Lock up the rear wheel on a motorcycle and I promise you it will pass the front end very quickly. In most front wheel drive vehicles the rear wheels are there just to hold the back end up, kinda like a trailer.

    My back brake pads are half the size of the front. I did assume because my JEEP GC is heaver in the front because of the diesel Eng was the reason for the large brakes and they (the front brakes) would wear more.

    Chuck: The front brakes on light trucks and passenger cars take on the bulk of the braking load, hence they are bigger than the rear and will have a tendency to wear faster. I don’t think it has too much to do with weight distribution on a light truck or passenger car. Medium to heavy duty trucks, RVs, and buses are a different story.

    Interesting. I just changed the rear brake pads on our 2013 Jeep Wrangler. Only the rear pads were worn, the front have lots of life left. This was the first time pads were changed (70k miles. one owner).

    I have never seen rear pads needing to be changed before front pads. I was surprised as well. No towed braking on this Jeep.
