Titling a new Prevost
Posted by Corey on October 31, 2015 at 6:24 pmSomething is bugging me. I seem to remember (now there’s a misnomer) that there are/was 1 or 2 states that titled a new conversion by the shell year. Ring any bells anyone ? Geo.

I always thought it was the year your coach was built by Prevost not converter finished year. Seems like that might cause a problem when ordering parts for coach.

Glens, parts ordering is by Vin# , usually the title from the converter is one year newer than the shell year and sometimes even more. Geo.

Mine was originally titled as in Michigan as a 1999 Liberty Coach (I’ve always been under the impression the chassis was built by Prevost as a 1998 and Liberty converted it as a 1999). Who issues the “manufacturers statement of origin” (aka “manufacturers certificate of origin”) or MSO? Does the converter issue the MSO?
Womeone from one of the converters monitoring the Forum or a Forum member who recently bought a new coach might know.
I suspect (another way of saying “wild ass guess”), that the converter issues a MSO (and hence gets to choose the “year”) and this is probably driven by titling and registration issues. If a title is issued, the state is looking for registration fees and sales tax.

converters issue and that is why sometimes the chassis is two years older….I’ve seen them change years prior to selling….

George,
When I bought my first Prevost, a 97 Marathon with a 96 chassis I licensed it in GA and had a hell of a time getting it titled as a 97. Prevost then and now not being in their database required a law enforcement inspection to verify vin and manufacturer date. The manufacturer date on the rear data plate said 1996 and it took documentation from Marathon for me to get it all sorted out. It made no difference originally that the sellers title showed 1997. Sales tax was not an issue back then, casual sales were exempt.
I remember there were other states at the time with the same problem.

I have had three Liberty coaches which suggests some consistency to the titles. That would be wrong.
The first had a 1987 shell and it went into service in 1988, however it was titled as a 1987 Prevost. My second Liberty was a 1996 shell, and was titled as a 1997 Prevost which appears somewhat typical. My current coach has a 2005 shell and is titled as a 2006 Liberty.
Apparently there are no national rules or regulations on how our coaches should be titled.
I do know for a fact that some shells are as much as 4 years older than the title of the coach, and one coach I looked at had a four year older shell than the title, and an engine whose build date was 5 years older than the title.

The chassis is a Prevost., The convertor completes the unit. Convertors are known as 3rd stage convertors or manufactuers. State laws vary from state it state, most require the convertor to be registered and licensed as a manufacturer with DMV. Since the Prevost chassis is one component in their product they can issue MSO or CO (Manfacturer Statement of Orgin or Certificate of Orgin)for their completed product. In the case of some small convertors the customer buys the shell and uses that MSO for titling, since the convertor may not be a licensed manufacturer. Now, in addition to this, a few states do not have a provision for 3rd stage convertors.

I’ll be more specific. Does anyone have knowledge of a particular state or states not recognizing the converters new date for title and using only Prevosts Vin in the ’90s and early 00’s ? Particularly Texas ? The reason I ask is that our bus is a ’99 shell, converter Vantare and originally titled as a ’99 in Texas. Dukeflyer’s bus currently for sale on PC is a ’93 titled Liberty but the same as any other ’94 H. I’m wondering if His bus was originally titled in Texas also. Duke, I know you’re at least the 2nd or 3rd owner do you know ? Dave Wall ? Geo.

Prevost sells the shell as an incomplete vehicle and the converter issues a new MSO and they can use what they want for the year. The VIN plate states it is an incomplete vehicle right on it.
My Legendary was a 2006 chassis and titled as a 2008. My Liberty is a 2010 shell and is titled as a 2011. Glider kits for trucks do somthing similar…use parts from a 5 year old truck, but title it as a current year.

Geo: We spent a couple hours in Dukeflyer’s H when they were at the OSH air show this summer. Very nice coach. He seemed like the kind of guy who would have been maticulous on preventative and proactive maintaince. Smart move for you. You and Corey will really like. Gets you to where you told me you’re headed to.

Actually as a buyer having the shell asa the model year means a lower price. As a seller a later date on the title is a benefit.
Unless you flip coaches I’m not sure the model year on the title means much more than bragging rights.

No Dick, not yet, a friend in Bradenton might be interested. I understand all that about converter year, shell year and the price being based on title year. I still want to know if Texas was a state that used Vin# year instead of MSO. Geo.
