  • Tires Missing A Chuck

Posted by Archived on October 1, 2014 at 7:55 pm

    All,

Looked at a coach earlier this week and saw large chucks of rubber missing from the tires. The tires in question are Michelin 315s on the drive and tag axle. The age of the tires are late 2010. The outside tire on the drive axle on the passenger side was missing a signififcant chuck of rubber. The tire on the tag axle on the driver’s side was missing a chuck of rubber. Also, the inside tire on the drive axle appeared to have a flat spot. The tires were not losing air.

Any tthoughts on the cause for the loss of rubber?

Depending on where on the tire it is, it could be lots of things. Could be running over road debris, hitting curbs or large potholes, or if in the tread area, it could be tread separation due to a faulty tire, or runnning it low on air.

Where on the tires are the problems? Shoulder, sidewall, or tread area? That will help diagnose it better.

When chunks are missing from a tire the usual cause is a road hazard. Whatever the cause it might not be a bad idea to have a Michelin dealer look at the tires just to be sure they are safe.

    Mark,

One chuck is missing from the outside edge of the drive axle on passenger side and the other is on inside edge on the drive axle on the driver’s side. Both missing chucks are a good size, probably about the size of a fist.

I would think road hazzards then. Most likey culprit when it is chunks that large, other than when the tread actually spearates from the casing. That would be very easy to spot if that happened! We had very few tread issues that were not road hazzard related.

Are these Michelin tires you looked at? Just wondering….

    Mark,

The tires in question are Michelin ZXA’s 315s. Manufactured date is late 2010. Thanks for responding.
