  • Tires Losing Air Pressure

Posted by Reese on August 5, 2020 at 4:36 pm

    All,
I need input from this board regarding tires losing air pressure. The tires on our coach was relatively new when we purchased. At the time of purchased I had the dealer install the Pressure Pro system. The coach has been sitting four weeks. I went out to the coach today and three of the tires have lost 30 pounds of air. The outside tire on the drive axle on the driver’s side has been a continuous problem. Marathon replace the core of the valve stem on this tire in June, but that did not correct the problem. Are the sensors causing the air leaks? I am perplexed about this situation.
We have owned four other coaches and none of them has presented the problems that we have experienced with these tires. Any and all suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

If you suspect the sensors are an issue use a good quality leak detector around the valve stem at the sensor or at the wheel.

30 PSI in a few months is not going to blow big bubbles rapidly but you will see some evidence.

We bought our Pressure Pro system from Tom and installed it next door to his former Florida estate. Left front tire seemed to lose air. Happened to stop a month later at Houston Prevost for an unrelated issue and mentioned to the tech. There was a tiny crack/separation in the two halves of the PP indicator that went on the valve stem. Tom had PP immediately replace it, shipping it to me on the road at no cost to me.

Tom stands behind what he sells.

    I have a few questions:

    1. have you checked the tires with a good gage?

    2. Did you have this problem before you installed The Pressure Pro’s?

    3. Do the tires have or have ever had balancing beads in them? If yes, the rims and tire beads may have that stuff on them and slowly causing leaking.

    Reece,

Soap up the sensors, if there is a problem at the seam you’ll see it. Look under the sensor as well where it screws on to the valve stem. Have you soaped the valve stems including the nut that holds it in place?

    Roy,

Thank you for your response.Yes, I check the tire pressure with a gage to confirm the problem. Pressure Pro readings and the tire pressue gage is within a couple of pounds.

When I purchased the Marathon I had the Pressure Pro installed. I do not know if the tires leaked air before the Pressure Pro was installed.

    Tom, Jon, and Dick,

Thank you for your responses. I will get the spray bottle with soapy water and spray the sensors.

    Reese:

Had an issue with a slow leak on a tire only when the pressure pro tire monitor was on the tire. Turns out a small piece of chrome had come off the valve stem extension and stuck to the little O-ring in side the tire monitor. The next time I screwed the tire monitor on the valve stem the little piece of chrome on the O-ring caused a leak where it seated on the valve stem.

    Check the O-Ring

    Chuck,

Thank you for your response. Already been to the coach and sprayed the sensors with soapy water. Found two sensors leaking. I will have to take the coach to a tire shop to find out why the other two tires are leaking.

Sensors leaking, or leaking between the valve stem and sensor.

I had one sensor split at the seam and leaked because the tire changer forced it into the valve stem hole on a 365 wheel. Centering the valve stem and then replacing the broken sensor was all it took.

Leaks at the valve stem to sensor point are possibly due to minute pieces of debris as mentioned previously.

    Jon,

The sensors were leaking at the seam that goes around the sensor. It was very noticeable. I can send you the pictures. I do not know how to put pictures on the forum. Thank you for your response.

No need for pictures because your description is more than adequate.

However that is only a typical failure if someone installed them so pressure was applied like in an off center clearance hole or excessive tightening.

What caused the failure at the sensor seam has to be fixed or you are going to continue having issues. Sounds like whoever mounted your tires might have created the problems somehow.

    Jon,

Thank you for your comments. Your comment about over tightening the sensor is a concern. I might be guilty of that deed.

Tom and I exchanged emails and telephone calls on Thursday. Because the dealer purchased the PressurePro System he recommended that I talk with PressurePro. Talked with PressurePro customer service and they requested the two defective sensors be returned and will send me replacements when they are available. The customer service representative was very helpful.

I am going to have to test my sensors after Tom posted them pictures. I have a few very slow leaks which I wrote off to old valve stems left in the rims when new tires were placed. I did find and fix one that was a bad extension.

Tightening the Sensor too much can cause the Sensor to leak at the seam. What’s too tight……. No clue. I always try to screw them on putting most of the pressure on the bottom of the Sensor, below the seam, hard to explain.

    Rocky,

I emailed you two pictures of the leaking sensors.
